Vintage commercial vehicles are a proper part of Irish road culture. Restored trucks, classic vans, old workhorses kept in good nick by enthusiasts and collectors - once a vehicle hits 30 years from its original registration date, it’s vintage and with that comes a slightly different set of rules around the CVRT testing involved.

Most owners know their vehicle needs to be safe and legal. What catches people out is assuming the rules are the same as for modern commercial vehicles. They're not, and the differences are worth understanding.

When it comes to commercial vehicle testing and roadworthiness in Ireland, it’s important to know that there’s a far-reaching legal framework behind it. Developed and updated over a number of years, the standards set down are clear and enforceable and when you’re driving commercially, you need to follow them.

The foundation that everything is built on is the Road Safety Authority (Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness) Act 2012. It established the legal basis for commercial vehicle CVRT testing in Ireland, as well as the obligations drivers and fleet managers have in keeping their trucks and vans up to spec.

Since then, a series of updates have added further detail, updating and expanding the rules, and it pays to be fully up to speed with what’s required.

If you’re operating a commercial vehicle in Ireland, or indeed a fleet of vans or trucks, a Certificate of Roadworthiness (CRW) is something you can’t afford to ignore. It’s official proof that your van has passed its CVRT test - a legal requirement for driving it on Ireland’s public roads.

Most CRWs are valid for 12 months, but the expiry date doesn't always work the way people expect. It's not always calculated from the day you actually passed the test, and that catches plenty of operators off guard when renewal comes around sooner than anticipated.

Vehicles in Ireland get modified all the time. Campervan conversions, and changes to seating are just two examples, and once you start altering a vehicle from how it left the factory, you're into territory that affects safety, legality and registration.

An SQI report is what bridges that gap, as it’s the documentation that shows a qualified engineer has looked at the work and that the vehicle is still legal and compliant with the safety standards in needs to adhere to.

Modifications made without proper certification can result in a failed periodic vehicle inspection, stall at registration or land you in a difficult conversation with your insurer. Understanding what these reports involve and when you need one keeps things moving and stops small compliance gaps.

Most people don’t think about their commercial vehicle test (CVRT) unless it’s on their doorstep. It’s something you book, get through, and forget about for another year. If the vehicle feels fine and there are no obvious issues, it’s easy to assume there’s nothing to worry about.

The thing is, a lot of the faults that cause real issues on the road don’t show up in your day-to-day driving. Brakes wear gradually, tyres lose grip, and small mechanical issues build up in the background.

Failing a CVRT test isn’t particularly unusual. In fact, we see it happen quite a lot. So, that means you need to be prepared for an eventuality that will see you provided with a CVRT testing fail report. The problem is that a lot of people don’t fully understand what the report is telling them.

A fail test report obviously means the vehicle didn’t meet the required safety standards on the day of the test. It also tells you why it failed and what needs to happen before you can drive legally.

Driving an HGV isn't like driving a car, as trucks get put through gruelling work every day. They take long trips with heavy loads, along rough roads. It means that brakes, tyres, suspensions and all those other important parts wear out. It’s why HGV 12 Week Maintenance Inspections exist.

Rather than being just about staying on the right side of traffic laws in Ireland, they're also vital for safety, preventing fines and avoiding unnecessary breakdowns. When you manage a fleet, the need is multiplied many times, which is why HGV Maintenance needs to be scheduled regularly.
