The Garden Design Mentor

The Garden Design Mentor After 25 years working for myself as a garden designer, I have learnt a thing or two. Now I want to pass my knowledge on to you. Louth.

I have learnt the hard way, so you don’t have to. I offer Garden Designers, support and resources for their design Journey. Many of us got into garden design through our love of plants, flowers, nature and being in the great outdoors. We are creative people hoping to express ourselves and follow our dreams. While this is still a guiding force behind everything I do, the reality is that if you want

to make it as a garden designer, your creativity and love of all things garden will only get you so far. Being a garden designer often means being a small business owner first and foremost. While your design course took care of the design bit, who thought you how to run a business? Running a design business can be especially challenging since all your concentration and energy is usually taken up by your latest design project. With all that on your mind, it can be easy to make simple mistakes or miss vital opportunities that can be the difference between your business succeeding of failing. My name is Andrew Christopher Dunne and I run a multi-award-winning garden designer based in the grounds of the magnificent Beaulieu House and Gardens in Drogheda co. Myself and my small team have designed some of the most exclusive and luxurious private gardens in Ireland and have taken commissions as far away as Australia. I have been lucky enough to have received a total of four gold medals at the Bloom flower show and received the coveted “Best in show” title on two separate occasions. My design experience is extensive, having designed not only gardens but houses, sculptures, furniture, interiors whiskey maturation facilities and much more. I am a a former windsurfing instructor, and been designing gardens now for 25 years. I lives with his wife and 3 three children in the picturesque fishing village of Clogherhead in County Louth.

You never know who needs to hear this. Being a garden designer is often a solitary experience. You have to make all the decisions yourself. This is a pressure and a responsibility. Often this will lead to procrastination. Don’t let this happen. Believe in yourself. You got this. Have a great weekend.

As a designer, one of our key assets is our ability to think differently. This is why we can see something our clients can’t. However when starting out or under pressure, most designers will forget to think outside the box and just do whatever the client wants. Our clients have enlisted our services because they believe we can do a better job than they can. The trouble is, sometimes we don’t believe in ourselves.
Your role as a designer is not to design exactly what your client asks for, it is to design something even better, something they could never have thought of.
Here is some advice that might just help. Save the tips and feel free to share.

Thanks for all your votes folks. As I suspected, there was a lot of interest on all subjects. So I guess I have no choice but to post on all of these. I will start with Software tomorrow and work my way through them.

I know I shouldn’t have favourites but of all the Sculptures I have commissioned for my clients, this has to be my favourite. It was created by the supremely talented . We were looking for a piece that would serve as a focal point at the end of a natural swimming pool. Something that would sit well in the garden and not dominate the space. Linda made it even more personal for my client by incorporating small “treasures” into the piece that belonged to my client. How many can you spot?

I just love it. How about you?
