“Every expert was once a beginner”

Our newest members training with Billy atop Ballycotton cliffs this morning in challenging conditions.
We are blown away every week with the strides each one is making!

As the weather varies this weekend, we again urge people planning a trip to the coast to prepare well. This applies to the cliff walks and beaches around the coast.

And always remember, if you see something or need assistance call 112/999 and ask for the coast guard.

3:1 Action… 📸
Some shots from Saturday morning, spent learning about how we work with our stretcher. A hugely important part of the cliff rescue.
Marie & James both climbing with the stretcher for the first time, while Maria & Chloe got to grips with the use of lowering and hauling systems.

With an increase of visitors over the midterm break, we continue to urge people to take caution while out and about on the cliff walk and be well prepared.

And always remember, if you see something call 112/999 and ask for the Coast guard.

A glorious day learning the ropes…

Two of our new recruits first day climbing led by training officer Billy.

Great to see so much potential at such an early stage! Well done James & Marie.

While the sun is shining and great weather for walking the cliffs, conditions under foot may not be so glorious. Be vigilant and call 112 or 999 if you need assistance.

A huge well done to some of our new volunteers on completing their search skills course in Tramore yesterday.
They are now active volunteers and we are so proud to have them on board.

Thanks to Tramore Coast Guard Unit for their hospitality.

A lovely morning and smiles all round for our first exercise of 2026. A cliff top stretcher and walking casualty scenario.

Routine exercises like this help keep our crew sharp.

Remember, if you see something call 999/112 and ask for the coastguard.

The time has come for us to say a heartfelt farewell to our Officer in Charge, John Walsh, as he retires after an extraordinary 50 years of service with the Ballycotton Coast Guard Unit.
Fifty years is an incredible milestone and
John's service has been characterized by complete and unwavering dedication to the Ballycotton unit. He has been a mentor to generations of volunteers, and the face of safety for our community. He built and sustained a standard of excellence that is admired by all and his legacy is written in the lives he saved and the families he reassured over his 50 years service.

Every person who has ever needed the Coast Guard in this area owes a profound debt of gratitude to John.

On behalf of the entire unit, the community of Ballycotton, and everyone whose lives you've touched or saved, thank you, John. We wish you a retirement filled with the peace and rest you have so richly earned.
