The softer light, the changing colours, the crispness in the air and the garden beginning to tell us that autumn is on its way.

It’s good for the garden, and it’s good for the soul. Time outdoors has a way of slowing us down, clearing our heads and reminding us to simply enjoy what’s around us.

So, if you need us, you know where we’ll be.

A rainy weekend in the garden? Make the most of it.
With plenty of rain on the way, it might be tempting to forget about the garden for the weekend. But late August is a great time to get a few jobs ticked off and let nature do some of the watering for you.

Give your garden a good check
Heavy rain can expose areas where water is pooling. Keep an eye on borders, containers and lawns that struggle to drain, particularly after a prolonged downpour.

Keep deadheading
Remove spent flowers from roses, dahlias, bedding plants and other summer favourites to encourage more blooms into early autumn.

Give tired plants a tidy
Cut back dead or damaged growth and remove fallen or diseased leaves from around plants. A little late summer tidying can make a big difference.

Check your fruit trees
Heavy fruit can put extra weight on branches. Give heavily laden branches some support and pick ripe fruit before it falls.

Check your pots
Containers can become very wet during heavy rainfall, especially if drainage holes are blocked. Raise pots slightly off the ground and make sure excess water can escape.

Start thinking about autumn
Late August is the perfect time to look around your garden and start planning for autumn planting, spring bulbs and those gaps you'd like to fill.

So, while the weather might not be perfect for sitting outside, it could be the perfect weekend for getting your garden ready for the season ahead.
