Before you specify timber in a tropical climate, ask one simple question: can it breathe?

Many timber problems are not caused by the species itself.

They are caused by trapped moisture.

Without proper airflow and drainage, heat and moisture can build up around timber components, increasing the risk of mould, premature ageing, and reduced long-term pertormance.

This is especially important in humid environments such as villas, resorts, catés, decking areas, and semi-outdoor spaces.

Last week, we took a road trip through Bogor — not for the scenery, but for the architecture.
Joined by fellow studios across Jakarta, we visited 3 projects that reminded us why we do what we do.

First, Kencana Valley — a warm welcome to set the tone for the day.
Then up to the highlands of Megamendung, where JSI Resort sits quietly in the mist. A chapel by K-Thengono, entirely shaped by glulam curves that feel almost impossible in person.
From there, Awrawikara by Andramatin — a timber building whose entire second floor was constructed in just 4 days.

We ended the day at Rancamaya, standing in front of a house built from solid Merbau wood, 20 years ago. Still standing. Still stunning.

Good architecture doesn't shout. It lasts.

They are overdesigned

Not because of mistakes
But because of timing and logic

When engineering comes too late
Optimisation is limited

And when timber is treated like steell
More material is added than needed

So teams compensate by:
- Increasing beam sizes
- Adding more connections
- Building in safety margins

This increases cost
Without improving performance
