This message goes out to all my fellow homo sapiens..

Elevate your state of consciousness above that of a one eyed deaf Neanderthal man.

Keep polluting at this rate...and within 2 generations there will be nothing but carcinogenic pollutants left to feed our children and grand children, our wildlife and our home; the planet.

I suggest everyone starts wearing their mask correct: over the nose and mouth.

Do not wear your mask over the eyes and ears. Don't blind yourself.

Wake up people, ditch dirty chemicals out of your lifestyle in stead of into our environment.

Where can you find these chemicals I hear you ask?

Look for them in:

Anything made by humans...

There are some good and financially affordable alternatives out there on the shelves of your shops. So don't be a hypocrite, if you really do love your children then start buying with awareness!

I met a someone today in Glastonbury.

She is a lovely 30 year old mother to a 3 year old son. Her husband died of cancer during lockdown.

The cancer was perfectly treatable. Hospitals were empty...

Yet he could not be treated due to the Covid restrictions.

Think people...

When you read the news, when you see the news, when hear people talking... for God sake think for yourself and find the truth...

OVER-REPORTING is a huge 21st century problem.

It gives more importance to certain topics than is needed and automatically takes over large volume of the capacity in your mind. Make no mistake, the news is always in favor of whoever decides on the narrative.

Don't let yourself be convinced by the media that life on earth hasn't been attacked by viruses and bacteria for the 3.77 billion years life has existed on this planet.

Change the narrative in your mind if you feel it is not serving you well and evolve.

This is how I set my furniture on fire!

After the intensive brushing and glueing each piece into place I give the wood a light scorching with a 104 KWatt blowtorch.

Why?

I found that the burning gets rid of the finer softer fibers and splinters. It also draws out the resin from the winter growth in the wood to create a natural protective layer. It also hardens the surface and increases the contrast in the timber. It has the potential to change the shade and mood of the timber.

It is important that this is done with care!

A smooth motion at the right distance from the timbers surface. The species of timber and grain direction play an important role also. It is also important to establish whether the timber needs to darken or remain the same shade. This will help determine what technique, distance and intensity of flame need to be used to achieve the desired effect.

I suppose it's like the creme brulee of wood!

Something technical....

Hi everyone,

In order to make my reclaimed wood look extra good, splinter free and hard-wearing I treat it in a particular way...

Reclaimed wood in the Merlini workshop is subjected to the following processes:

De-nailing

Drying

Edge straightening

Band-sawing to thickness

Planing to thickness

Cross-cutting

Brushing

Burning

Hand-sanding

Oiling (2 plus coats depending on type of finish)

This makes the wood look rustic, yet subtle and smooth. The combination of all these processes highlights the ageing of the timber. Whilst making it more hard-wearing by brushing out the softer grain.

The harder grain, which is grown in winter, is more dense and full of resin. Any object which impacts the timber during use, bounces and slides of the resinous and waxy higher ridges of the timber. Most usually without leaving a mark.

Gary Ingham Salon and Spa in Hampstead..

I worked together closely with owners and now friends Gary and Sean to add various accents a few years ago. (See pictures)

I was invited to come back 3 months ago to make things not only safer but even more in line with what they felt they wanted their venue to emanate.

Reclaimed wood at its best!

I designed this fuctional room devide on the beach in Mucat, Oman, a few years ago. I drew the design out in the sand.

A few weeks later I had made the first prototype. Made of reclaimed joist "skins" with chuncky shelves it sits organically in any environment.

This design allows to be made in a variety of timbers to achieve different feels and budgets.

What can I say about this place... the Pig & Pastry...

It hold a special place in many people hearts. Just as the people that run hit held a very generous and special place for the people of York.

Not only during the good times. During the lockdown they organised and cooked thousands of meals for anyone who needed help: the poor, the elderly, the poorly and the homeless. They jumped into this generous act without hesitation and inspired many to join them.

The Pig & Pastry has always displayed a real sense of humor in its interior and exterior. It features accents of nostalgia, cosyness, warmth and a dash of rebellion.

It was amazing to try and stock to this theme during the refurb in June. I used many of the existing pieces of furniture and reworked them into completely new designs. Any new materials were selected for their sustainable qualities and beauty. Farrow & Ball paints decorate the interior which was done with love by Steve Picasso Holding and his team of incredible workers.
