Not a pretty picture but the adjoining shed, which served us well despite the state it was in, has been demolished so the rubble you see here will be used as a base for when we create the driveway at the front of the property. We are now prepping for the decking areas which will be at the front and back of Acre Barn helping it connect better with the surrounding land.

So, after quite a long hiatus, we now have the cedar cladding almost completed on Acre Barn. It will slowly turn grey over time. The lobbies have most of their metal cladding on too with finishing trim work still to be done. Lots of work still needed to be done immediately outside the house in order to make a base for the decking/gantry work so that the building sits better in the land. Oh, and then there’s the shed to demolish and landscaping and the shed to build and the.....

We’ve moved in........ it feels very good. The girls are happy and so are the grown ups - that is what counts. Still a load of work to sort out but standing outside last night, after a full -on week in London, we saw bats, herons and barn owls doing their thing which was humbling. The whole point of this three year escapade is to get settled and to get back to some form of routine ( that will never apply to me so long as I stay in the mad world of tv ) but it seems to be working for the rest of the Wright clan. Tess is pictured in front of the two piles of builder’s off cuts of timber that were happily ignited a few weeks back. All I can say is that if you want to go down this route of self build ‘nirvana’ be very prepared for the long haul - getting the right builder is paramount and thankfully we did find them. It was a bonus having a wonderful wife who has had many years of experience working with builders, planning authorities and other suppliers which helped the process move along as best it could but there is nothing you can do about the crass financing system in this country for self builders who are self employed - you are treated as 2nd class citizens. It has taken us 9 months, and still counting, to get a very small mortgage in place to finally finish off the build which has been the most frustrating aspect of this venture, so if you want to do what we have embarked on be very aware of the many hoops you will have to jump through, not just once but again and again - and then again once more. This has not been your normal build - having to satisfy my mother’s requirements has added another dimension, that we have been very happy to address, but we have basically built two houses for about 400k ( excluding the plot cost ). If you feel confident, design it yourself but if not, get an architect in from the beginning and get them to address what your requirements are based around your budget and lifestyle. This is the best foundation to start from and don’t deviate from it - a good architect will connect with what you want in your proposed project and not lead you down a more expensive proposal for their own vanity. So, we’re not finished yet and we won’t be for a while but looking at what we have achieved so far, the future looks good and very interesting but boy, it has been a long haul to get to this point in all our lives..... but I’m not complaining......too much!

Myself and the family were away for a week and lots has happened since the last post on FB. The flooring is all down now and most of the prep work has been done for the painting - we hope to do the final hit next week when there will be less dust about. Nearly all the doors have been hung and look great as they are 54mm thick and solid with a v-groove fascia. My mother’s kitchen is well under way and should be finished this week. Ours will be started next week. The oil and water will be connected too this week so the heating system will be tested and signed off hopefully next week as well. The outside is a quagmire after the wettest March in 10 years so when all the building materials are cleared we’ll have to start thinking about what to do about parking areas for cars etc. Steps will have to be created for each front door as the ground drops away from the front. There is still a load of work to do and we’re moving in, in 11 days time!

It has been mostly painting this last week which has progressed rapidly thanks to Darren & Anton. An amazingly quick application of a mist coat and first coat has nearly covered all the bare plaster. The annexe staircase and skirting/architraves are all getting prepped prior to fitting. A damp proof membrane coat has been applied to the concrete floor on the ground floor in preparation for the oak flooring which is being laid down this week. We have our plinth made for the boiler which will be commissioned early next month. Large pea shingle (approximately 40 tonnes) will need to be placed all around the edge of the building to help against the battle with the clay and mud but this will probably happen after Easter. It looks like we will be going with some form of framed metal grill panel to create our stepped area in front of the two entrance doors. This could then continue across the front and most of the rear to help the building ‘connect’ more with the land. Our intended move-in date has now been knocked on to the 21st April.

At long last the cedar cladding is being put on the exterior. The timber was grown on the Wiston estate in West Sussex. The galvanised guttering is also being installed. The tiling is well underway in the bathrooms and lobby areas. The second fix for the electrics has been completed apart from some wall lights that need to be purchased. All the plastering has been done and our painter will be starting today to prep and spray a mist coat and first coat throughout. The oil tank has arrived as well as the water tank from Germany. Unfortunately, it is too big to get into the utility room so the exterior door will have to be removed to get it in. The main electricity cable feed to the house has been laid in a trench which was dug by our neighbour Shawn.

I’m writing this post again after stupidly deleting the perfectly good one yesterday. So, we are back on it after another move to another temporary address - thank heavens Ella & Tess find it all a bit of an adventure. On site, the plaster work is almost complete and the slate tiles for the lobbies and utility room are being put down this week. The timber flooring is also arriving but will be laid down in about two week’s time. The oil boiler is on site too and needs to be installed. The wood fibre layer of insulation is being attached to the exterior with a membrane going over before the final layer of timber cladding finishes it all off. A bit of painting had to be done in the utility room before all the pipework, water tank and HRS could be fitted. I think our moving in for Easter is a little bit optimistic........

It’s all about the interior now with the plaster boarders and plasterers working at full tilt. Martin the carpenter has started on the annexe stairs which got my mother’s approval today (phew). Apparently the team arrived yesterday morning and it was minus four outside but plus ten inside with no heating services connected so next week will be very intersecting regarding the cold weather we are due. The roof is now complete and looks great. We have a week or so of more plastering and then the exterior cladding will commence which will further change the appearance. I’m not one to gush but things are looking good, very good, after nearly 3 years of planning but there is a hell of a lot more to sort out.

The house is now having denim and four tons of wood fibre inserted in all the voids to make this a very well insulated dwelling (there is about a 200mm deep layer of jabolite under the floor screed as well). The plaster boarding has progressed too. All the roof lights are in and the first floor partitioning is well under way. There is also pipework fitted for the solar panels which will be fitted at a later date. We are in the process of getting quotes for decorating, roof light blinds and kitchen fitting x 2. The oak flooring is due to be laid mid March. Oh, and we now have an official address with the local council!
