All of these items are from a project completed last week, the remit was that all items had to be made out of the old church pews which were installed during the last renovation in 1864, from messages written in pencil on the under side of the pew benches and from church records these were made in Lincoln, the benches were well made, joints were wedged mortice and tenon and copious amounts of nails, ranging from 1 to 6 inches, with no apparent glue. The nails, placed every 4" or so meant that the longer lengths of timber in the doors and frames had to be new, the door panels still used the old pew wood. I believe the wood was cedar from colour, weight and smell, but that's as scientific as I get and may be wrong. The font cover top now contains a 2023 Kings head £1 coin, the doors below are now the front for an office, at the other end of the church, there are two identical units, (frames and three doors) which have now become storage units. The church is St Mary's and is in Huggate which is about 10 miles from Driffield and is now a community warm space and open to visitors, well worth a visit and as a rest stop, is very popular with cyclists and walkers.
