REVIEW OF 2025 (5 of 5)
I am making 5 posts detailing my favourite walls of the year.

This was the biggest project of the year and nearly broke us. The client had a 3.5m high retaining wall at the end of their garden that was bulging dangerously at its base for several metres. The only way to fix it was to bring it down stone by stone from the top for an 11m stretch of the wall (35t of stone). The ground behind was very unstable and a storm at the weekend two weeks into the work brought down several tons of material that the wall would be holding up once built. We removed 2 large skips full of material and brought in an additional 10t of stone, all by hand to and from the skip that was 50m away and down two sets of steps. Ouch. Working tirelessly for several weeks we eventually completed it and a very good wall it is to... if I do say so myself.

REVIEW OF 2025 (4 of 5)

Here the client had sleepers retaining half his garden for a 20m long stretch and wanted a 1m high dry stone wall to replace it. We chose Kerridge stone to build this wall with as the colours would compliment the extension the client was building which would be clad in bronze cladding. Along with 50mm thick indian stone tops this ended up being a high quality wall which we are very happy with. The client was so happy she was planning on a 'wall party' in the spring of 2026 which made me smile πŸ˜ƒ.

Smaller jobs - our bread and butter.
While the bigger jobs take the glory the smaller jobs are our bread and butter and what we love doing because they are usually repairing existing walls with existing stone and the challenges that can throw up. These photos are just a few of the ones from 2025.

REVIEW OF 2025 (2 of 5)
I am making 5 posts detailing my favourite walls of the year.

Using stone from Yorkshire for once πŸ˜€.
Here the client wanted an 1.8m high wall built along the back of her property with an existing gate to remain in the middle of it. Getting stone there was tricky to say the least. We had to get the stone dropped near the road some 200m away and use an excavator and dump truck to bring the stone to the wall location through the farmers field.
We used 36 tons of reclaimed stone from Yorkshire which we hadn't used before. The stone was generally smaller than we are used to but it was also a lot easier to shape and thus we really enjoyed building this wall... but then we enjoy most walls to be fair.
We used some existing aspect of the reclaimed stone to work with the gate latches as well. see photo. Aren't we clever? 😳
I've attached a couple of progress photos here so you can see a few aspects like:
- the clear run before foundations are laid,
- the foundations themselves,
- all the stone laid out on the ground in what is actually an orderly fashion.

REVIEW OF 2025 (1 of 5)
I am going to make 5 posts detailing my favourite walls of the year.

Half Round topped small retaining wall.
The curved walls shown here were replacing concrete slabs that were leaning forward and unsightly. With the drives sloping at varying degrees making it tricky for this wall to look right we were happy with the finished product as was the client.

Straight Retaining Wall with built in steps.
The client wanted to build a patio at the back of his garden and thus we were tasked with building this retaining wall in front of it's future location including steps up to the raised area.
While I don't like using mortar we will do when using these indian stone tops as kids running along them are inevitable in the future so the more secure the better.

Two Day Introduction to Dry Stone Walling Course - Β£135

The two days give you plenty of time to practice what you have been taught, learn from your mistakes and hone your skills to give you confidence to build a wall in your own garden. You will be working on existing walls that require rebuilding within a real re-wilding landscape and once rebuilt will remain in place for decades to come.
All days run from 9:30am – 4pm at Sunart Fields on the outskirts of Whaley Bridge in the beautiful Peak District.

Finally completed the wall in Whaley Bridge which we started back in April. 30 tons later and we are well happy with the end product.
Stone supplied by Abacus Stone Sales. Great stone to shape but a lot was small in size so it took time to build.
Luckily our client was more than happy for us to take our time and do as best a job as we could. We're delighted with the end result, especially considering there were 3 cheek ends in a relatively short length.
You know you've done well when the client does a little jig as she goes back to the house after completion πŸ˜„.

I've nipped away from our bigger project to help a client keep those cute little lambs in their field by finishing off a wall either side of a gate that was put into the wall over the winter. Love putting swan necks into walls when appropriate.
This is proper gritstone that destroys gloves just be looking at them 🀣.

Good progress on our current job which we started before the Easter Holidays. One side of the gate is now complete and the cheek end of the other side is nearly up. Starting to look like it might be a wall at some timeπŸ˜ƒ.
All this stone is reclaimed stone so I took the opportunity to fit a stone with a hole already in it next to the gate to accommodate the hook. It's the little bits that count.
