Another Plate Rack, and open shelving, but this time in birch ply, with oak pegs and laminate faced shelves and sides, in a bespoke kitchen I made for friends in Birmingham.

A different method of construction to the solid oak frames with oak dowels version, this time routing out slots for the plates to sit in.

A Plate Rack can make a great visual feature from a basic necessity - i.e. somewhere to safely store your crockery! With the addition of a row of shorter pegs below, they can also provide somewhere to hang your favourite mugs, or kitchen utensils.... handy!

Lots of components go into each plate rack, these ones made in solid oak, accurately drilled, and sanded then assembled in sub-components before the final glue up.

Turning a SketchUp plan into reality! 🤔💭💡

This was a tricky project, to turn a top floor double bedroom into a bunk room for up to 6 youngsters (their 3 plus friends) at a holiday home in Dorset. They are a sailing family ⛵and liked the idea of cosy cabin beds, each person having a drawer and a kit bag locker, a couple of little shelves inside the bunk for phones and books etc. and of course some portholes to peek out of! 👀

Modelling the space in SketchUp allows me to work out how every piece intersects and means I can pre-make and finish all of the components in the workshop (and there were a LOT of components! 🤯) Then it was just a case of getting everything up to the third floor and working in a very small space in a room with no level or plumb surfaces - standard! 😄

The timber pile in the workshop waxes and wanes over time, and it's hard to throw away shorter offcuts, as you just never know when you might just need that bit! However there comes a point, when you need to have a good old sort out, so this week, with help from my great friend, colleague, landlord and workshop cohabitee Rex Johnson, () we set up some racking just for those tantalising short bits!

Small Space Solutions 2 - WFH

Another small room which was a fairly unappealing home office, is now a nice ergonomic space with everything in easy reach for an IT engineer working from home. 💻👨‍💻🖨️
Completely handmade in the workshop, using birch ply with an applied Egger HPL Laminate. Another tricky installation which needed lots of templating for the desk top to flow seamlessly!

Small Space Storage Solutions!

A titchy box room in a very wonky cottage, with a sloping bulkhead over the stairs, was being used as a dressing room, but it was awkward, and cramped.
I modelled the room in SketchUp (as best I could) to establish the maximum sizes for the cabinetry, which I made, and pre-finished in the workshop.

I had to deliver it flat packed, and assemble the units in the space, as the stairs were so narrow, and once all assembled and fixed in position, I then had to scribe all of the infill pieces to the ceilings and walls - some of the craziest scribes I've done!

The result is a functional and organised dressing room, and a happy client 😊 (plenty of room for MORE shoes! 😉👠🛍️)

English elm is renowned for its interlocked and often wild grain. It can be tricky to work with, but with care, sharp tools and plenty of sanding it finishes beautifully. The grain can range from smooth and flowing to bold and dramatic, making every item unique.

Off to a great friends' 50th birthday party tomorrow, where this vinyl storage unit and DJ station will be getting put through it's paces! Looking forward to seeing it loaded with records (and a glass or two of fizz!)
Birch ply cabinet with 6mm walnut veneer to the end panels and solid walnut feet. Double thickness birch ply top with Formica (Fir F8237)
