If your hallway feels like a dumping ground… this is for you.
Hallways work hard.
It seems to become the natural dumping ground for shoes, bags, keys, letters, parcels, dog leads and everything else in between!
But it’s also the first thing you see when you walk through the door.
So how do you make it both practical and beautiful at the same time?
Here’s how we approach a hallway when we’re designing it for a family home:
1️⃣ Start with flooring that can cope
Hallways take a lot of traffic, so choose something durable that still adds character. Patterned tiles or a runner with stair rods instantly lifts the space while making it practical and durable for day to day life.
2️⃣ Keep the palette calm
Softer tones help a hallway feel brighter, bigger and less chaotic. Subtle wallpaper and warm neutrals will add depth without overwhelming the space.
3️⃣ Add soft lighting
Ceiling lights alone can feel really harsh. A wall light or slim lamp on a console creates a warmer welcome (and helps when you’re searching for your keys!).
4️⃣ Create a drop zone
A narrow console, tray for keys, mirror and a basket for bits and pieces can completely change how organised the space feels as you walk in.
5️⃣ Storage for real life
Hooks, benches and cupboards can be built in to make a space work harder for you.
Save this for when your hallway starts driving you mad.
