Visiting the exhibit at last week’s was a true celebration of wood. For us at Mundy Veneer it felt like our natural home.

Showingcasing various species in lumber form with small sections worked and finished was a brilliant way of illustrating the transformation from raw material to beautifully crafted furniture. A window into what each wood can yield, not always apparent from the exterior, in the hands of a bespoke maker.

Their work feels honest, solid and unpretentious. Species such as Oak, Ash, Walnut and Chestnut are honed and crafted into contemporary form, a world away from rustic.

Solid wood is cleverly combined with veneer. Our Ash Olive veneer looked amazing in a finished piece giving us the first opportunity to see it after sourcing the log. (Veneer spotting always our favourite part!)

This exquisite chess table was created by furniture designer and maker, Slawek Rudyk, a graduate in furniture design from Oxford Brookes University.

Using veneers from one of our offcuts boxes, together with a richly coloured heirloom holly veneer, Slawek has painstakingly measured, cut and taped each element. The images show the level of skill and precision required for this highly decorative work embellished with 3D engraving.

Influenced by several years working with antique furniture in Germany, Norway and Poland and subsequently with bespoke designers MBMC Studios in their craft cabinetry division. Slawek has now set up his own furniture design company, Arttrees Studio, creating cabinetry, chairs, stairs and custom windows as well as intricate marquetry.

As Spring blossoms into life our Bloom Collection of veneer is a perfect reflection of the energy and playful colours of the season.

The collection offers a sophisticated combination of rich pastels through ochres, blues, greens, pinks and reds, guaranteed to make an eclectic and uplifting colour statement.

Featuring veneers from our dyed natural range, there’s more to the selection than purely colour. Each veneer is enriched by the individual grain patterns of natural wood from Bolivars to Figured Anegre to rotary cut Birch. Engineered natural veneers add a sprinkling of pattern.

Shown here in an abstract marquetry work by these veneers are designed to work together or stand alone to deliver a welcome dose of stylish exuberance.

The flowing, organic designs of are quite unexpected, considering the unconventional route he has taken to his chosen profession. With a first in Materials Science from Oxford University, an MSC in Aircraft Systems Design and a career mapped out in patent law, working with wood was a distant calling.

But once the calling took hold, Theo immersed himself in the craft, creating a sequence of beautiful, unique pieces. His work explores curves, texture and tactility, strongly influenced by his materials science background. Specialising in bespoke hifi cabinets he has been commissioned to create anything from unusual desks to dovetailed commodes.

Veneer is a key component in his designs, enabling gravity-defying shapes. He combines constructional thicknesses, solid wood and other materials such as Jesmonite resin to push the boundaries of furniture making.

Interesting shapes also deliver functional benefits such as the branch-style curved Sycamore veneer shelves in his drinks cabinet with beautiful hand carved Jesmonite doors. The theatre of shape is everywhere including the Mantis chair made from Sapele veneer twisted into six components, and a constructional oak side table is more sculpture than table!

With the possibilities of veneer fully on the radar, expect more ‘wood meets materials science’ creations from this talented designer maker.

We are delighted to be involved in this fabulous project, the Lalique Home Bar by Elicyon, due to launch at this year’s WOW!House in early June.

As part of their extensive materials mix, Elicyon have selected one of our most sought-after luxury veneers, Birds Eye Maple, in an elegant, honey-coloured shade.

This veneer oozes character in its bountiful pips, shaped as the name suggests like birds’ eyes, sprinkled across a subtle, iridescent crown grain.

Now in the capable hands of Etons Bespoke, we can’t wait to see the results.

Calling all marquetry and fine woodwork artisans…

Large boxes of veneer offcuts available just for the cost of courier shipping (£30). These large 60 x 60 x 52 cm boxes are full to the brim with various veneer trimmings generated from our daily sourcing and supply of luxury veneers.

The contents of each box are completely random, but usually contain a mix of species, grain, character woods and dyed natural veneers from our Tabu collection.

A flying visit to the workshop last month gave us an interesting peak into the process of this high end joinery company.

Treated to a quick tour of their well equipped, organised space we saw a range of bespoke designs at various stages of completion. These guys are not afraid of a tricky brief and a curve or two.

Veneer is a staple in their creation of luxury designs and assorted veneers are stored ready for use along with substrates and backing materials.

Whilst there we collected a wonderful example of their work, a set of veneered panels, fresh from the spraying booth. Produced from one of our distinctive Eucalyptus veneers in a deep reddish brown these created a showstopping backdrop to our new Surface Design Show Stand.
