I have always felt that Councillor Liz Grey, Chair of Wirral Council Environment and Transport Committee has an obsession with implementing an anti car agenda even at the expense of the local economy. She has disregarded residents and business owners and the councils own consulation to impose Car Parking Charges, 20mph speed limits and Cycle Lanes that people do not use or want. When some of her fellow Labour Councillors have indicated they will vote against these plans the local labour leadership have whipped them into voting for the proposals.
But even I was surprised to read the strength of her obsession in the Liverpool Echo article from 2021.
In it Cllr Grey said: “We need to be honest, we are trying to make it more difficult for people to drive, because it’s a bad habit. I know because I have it, we need to get rid of unnecessary journeys, because many journeys we do are unnecessary.
Unless you have certain conditions or you’re heavily pregnant, you can cycle. If we have rolled out cycle lanes in 10 years time and if we’ve brought speed limits down I’ll be proud that we have better air quality and healthier people. We will look back in years to come and say we’re proud we did that.”
I've a message for Councillor Grey. We live in a democracy. You are not a dictator that can impose your ideology on the very residents you are supposed to represent. I also think it is wrong for someone with such extreme ideology to be chair of such an important committee.
