Every cabinet we build is lined with Paulownia, a blonde hardwood that has been used in Japanese furniture making for over a thousand years.

It is beautiful to look at and it stays that way. Unlike oak, Paulownia does not react with moisture and darken over time, even around sinks and dishwashers where water is constant. It keeps its clean, pale tone year after year. We finish it with a durable lacquer that wipes clean.

It is something you notice every time you open a door. And it is in every kitchen we make.

Every kitchen we make is built the same way. Solid wood, traditional in-frame, with our signature Paulownia interiors. What changes is the detail on the outside.

Shaker is a timeless, classic style. Recessed panels, clean lines, minimal detailing throughout. At home in almost any setting, from period to contemporary.

Fusion is our most contemporary style, sitting between modern and traditional. Flat slab fronts hung in-frame, finished with either a short cornice or a scribed edge into the ceiling for a clean, streamlined look.

Period English carries more traditional detail. Thumb moulds around the doors, c**k bead along the top drawers, a more detailed cornice and skirting to match.

English Heritage is the most architectural of the four. Raised and fielded panels, c**k-beading, a deep stepped cornice and detailed skirting. Made for homes with strong original character, or newer ones that want some brought in.

Four styles. One standard of making. Built to stand the test of time, and guaranteed for a lifetime when fitted by us.

The pantry at Hearthstone Cottage started as an awkward existing nook nobody had quite known what to do with. We built it out behind our Period English style doors painted in Farrow & Ball Old White, with Plank Hardware antique brass T-bars and oak spice racks set into the inside of both doors. Limestone runs underfoot and open oak shelves inside hold everything from spices to chopping boards. April calls it the kitchen's quirkiest and most useful corner.

One person is on a work call. Another is frying onions. The extractor is running and someone is trying to revise at the table. Open-plan works well when everyone is using the room in the same way. It works less well when one space has to be a kitchen, dining room, office, and sitting room all at once.

That is where broken-plan starts to make sense. Our latest journal entry looks at how to design one well, when it suits a home, and when it does not.

When James and April moved into Hearthstone Cottage in Tredington, the kitchen became the first big chapter of an ongoing renovation. It lived in a tired flat-roofed extension at the back of the cottage, sharing its space with a small sitting room nobody ever really used. As part of the renovation, the two rooms were knocked into one beneath a new roof lantern, with bifold doors out to the garden and limestone flagstones running through the whole room, and we came in alongside the build to design the kitchen for the new space.

The cabinetry is our Period English style throughout, with Farrow & Ball Old White on the perimeter and the pantry doors, Farrow & Ball Minster Green on the three-metre island, and Plank Hardware knurled antique brass on the cupboards and drawers. The worktops are Quartzforms Ocean Lagoon, milled with a fluted drainer beside the Shaws of Darwen Bowland sink, and a Quooker UK Fusion tap in patinated brass. The pantry was built into an awkward existing nook with oak spice racks set into the doors, and a custom Georgian over-mantel sits above the Falcon range. Opposite the island, a long dresser run holds glazed cupboards, an oak-lined open section and a cross-frame wine rack.

A peek at Hearthstone Cottage in Tredington. Once two unloved rooms in an old Cotswold cottage, now one big kitchen with a roof lantern overhead, bifold doors out to the garden, and a Farrow & Ball Minster Green island at the centre of it all. The photos just landed and we couldn't wait to share.

A peek inside Sycamore House, featured in the opening pages of the latest The English Home magazine. Designed in our Shaker style and painted throughout in The Little Greene Paint Company Boringdon Green, the kitchen is centred around a generous island with a vertical timber pillar detail. A two-door larder cupboard, built-in spice racks and open oak shelving sit alongside, and a matching laundry room continues the same look beyond the kitchen.
