The paint I use on your furniture isn't an afterthought.

I'm very particular about the paints I bring into my work. I only use quality, professional-grade paint. The kind where the pigment is rich, the finish is consistent, and the durability is real.

Not the stuff get at B&Q.

It's washable, wipe-clean, and built to handle real daily use. Sticky fingers, damp cloths, the lot. The colour goes on rich and deep. No thin, patchy coverage. No compromises.

It costs more than average paint. But the piece of furniture you're trusting me with deserves better than average.

The smooth finish is all down to the preparation that had been done beforehand.
This chair had a full clean. Sanding took too long so I switched to stripping it. Then cleaned it again. After letting out fully dry, it was primed, then two coats of Little Greene Paint.

There's a lot of of furniture in homes right now that nobody has touched in years.

The fear I hear most often is, "what if it gets ruined?"

Clean the corners of your drawers easily with a brush like this...

I use a grout cleaning brush which I bought from Robert Dyas. They make cleaning the corners of drawers so much easier than a sponge.

One of the hardest decisions isn't whether to keep a piece of inherited furniture.
It's deciding whether you're comfortable to change it.
Many people worry they'll regret updating something connected to a loved one.
But what often happens is the opposite.
The furniture becomes part of everyday life again.
Instead of sitting in a spare room.
Instead of feeling too precious to use.

When a piece of furniture has belonged to someone you love, trust matters.
That's why preparation is one of the most important parts of the process.
Long before the paint comes out, I'm checking the structure, cleaning every surface and making sure the piece is ready for its next chapter.
Good preparation isn't the glamorous part.
But it's often the difference between a finish that lasts a few months and one that lasts for years.
Every piece that comes into my studio is treated with care and respect.
Especially those with a story behind them.

One of the biggest fears I hear is:
"If I paint it, am I ruining it?"
The answer is usually no.
Furniture has often changed throughout its lifetime.
Repairs happen.
Finishes get updated.
Different generations leave their mark.
That's part of what makes older furniture so special.
When you update inherited furniture, you're not removing its story.
You're becoming part of it.

The number one thing people worry about before commissioning me isn't the colour.
It's whether changing the furniture will somehow change the memories attached to it.
And that's completely understandable.
Many of the pieces I work on belonged to parents, grandparents or other loved ones.
They're not just pieces of furniture.
They're reminders of people, places and moments.
But here's what I've learned.
The memories aren't in the finish.
They're in the story.
Updating a piece doesn't erase its past.
It simply allows it to continue being part of your life instead of sitting unused because it no longer suits your home.
