Very pleased to have installed this piece yesterday. Started with a pallet of inch thick sawn boards, and after lots of planing, cutting, glueing, sanding and oiling we've arrived at something that I hope provides function and beauty for a wonderful client

This is what it's all about for me. An idea gets put down on paper and I get asked if I can make it happen. And what a funky idea, it nestles perfectly in to its surroundings and I can't wait to hear what Charlie makes of his new accommodation. Thanks for the job Nickie, I'm really chuffed you're chuffed with it!

My picnic tables and benches are getting a lot of approval recently so I thought I’d test the water and start an order book for delivery in the coming Spring although those seeking al fresco seating before then will also be accommodated! Several examples of the picnic tables can be test-driven at Kilfinan Community Forest, they are extremely sturdy and, being made entirely of untreated larch, will weather well and last many years with minimal maintenance. An example of the bench design can be seen by the shore road across from Allt Mhor , Tighnabruaich although this one is an earlier incarnation made of treated spruce.
All of the following items are of 2” thick larch in 4” or 5” widths depending on the design. All fixings are stainless steel and the legs are finished with oak “feet” to cover the vulnerable end grain.
6 seater traditional picnic table: 1780mm x 1780mm, table height 780mm, seat height 450mm £390
8 seater octagonal picnic table: 2150mm x 2150mm, table top 1200mm x 1200mm @ 750mm height, seats 900mm wide @ 450mm height £470
3 seater bench, 1800mm wide, seat height 450mm £360
All designs can be modified or scaled down for children and individual bespoke designs are also possible.

A very unusual commission, a leaving present for a very highly regarded member of Tignabruaich RNLI's operational team. It's a four chamber bird-box and it was great fun to make. There'll be a corner of a garden in Ayrshire that will be forever Tighnabruaich! Very best wishes to Mike and Nan x

Argyll Coffee Roasters asked me to design and make a display unit for their exhibition stand at the SEC this week, which I enjoyed greatly. I used to do a lot of exhibition carpentry so it's good to revisit it. What really brings it to life, besides the excellent products, are the logos on the unit and the backdrops provided by Judith at Fyne d signs. Big shout out to Eve and Michael, hope you kicked ass in Glasgow!

This wee shed got a lot of kind comments from folks passing by as I was finishing the job. It's tucked away in a corner but one of the first things you see as you approach the main street in Tighnabruaich

This job has just been finished and delivered today. Ros at the Tighnabruaich Gallery got in touch and I was delighted to be asked to make a set of mahogany display cases. It's been the most challenging and satisfying job I've done in ages, and required a bit of time practising cutting dovetails by hand before "going live". One of my earlier efforts is pictured, thankfully they improved! Many thanks to Ros for a wonderful commission.

It's been absolutely ages since I've posted anything so here's a job from the tail end of last year. I was approached to make a memorial bench to be sited looking out to sea in Tighnabruaich. When my client Judy (pictured with her husband and dog) turned up at the installation with the memorial plaque for me to attach, I saw the bench was dedicated to Tom Shanks and his wife. Tom spent many years creating wonderful paintings of the area, one of which we have over our fireplace. A beautiful coincidence.

Here's a jewellery box made for my daughter's Christmas present. The lighter woods in the lid are locally grown holly and oak. The mahogany, unsurprisingly, is not local but I believe came from the doors of a 19th century fire station somewhere in Yorkshire!

The good weather and short working hours due to COVID-19 have allowed me to crack on with projects in the garden. Being Argyll, flat areas are at a premium hence the deck. Big respect and thanks to Ji at Kilfinan Community Forest, one of the few suppliers who has managed to keep going. Many folk insist on planed, profiled and pressure-treated timber for their projects and they get charged accordingly. Local timber straight off the local sawmill suits my purposes and at the prices they charge I'm happy to spend time and money treating it myself. As for the benches.. well, I'm a big fan of design led by function and whatever the hell you can get your hands on.

Here's the latest project, just completed in time for Christmas, and easily the most challenging job in aeons. A couple of friends and colleagues from my years on the Edinburgh International Festival got in touch to commission a table, but no ordinary table! Thick oak, extendable but unconventional, with epoxy resin features and metal legs. With the photos I've posted I've tried to show the evolution of the project. I particularly enjoyed welding up the metal legs and while doing so learnt a whole lot about strength and structural stability. Wobble was an issue until oak was incorporated into the leg structure, and in my opinion it's enhanced the overall look. The scariest element was the epoxy resin, it's so easy to get it wrong! It's given me lots of inspiration for further projects, watch this space.....

After two years of planning/procrastination this project took shape in the 2nd half of 2018 in our own garden. A summer-house, play-house and guest accommodation all year round thanks to insulation and electricity!
