Upholstery is all about problem solving and thinking in 3D. I'm trying to recreate the fluted channels in the back on a 1940s arm chair. Lots of calculating, thinking, planning and being brave! Wish me luck!



I am an upholsterer based in Thornbury, South Gloucestershire. I'm working on a beautiful mid-century armchair, which I've stripped back to the frame and now I'm building it back up and giving this beautiful chair a new lease of life.

I knew this was going to be a dusty job, but I didn't anticipate it would be this bad!



The video shows me stripping down a beautiful mid-century armchair. The upholstery had degraded to dust. I am an upholsterer based in Thornbury, near Bristol.

Today and over the entire bank holiday weekend I have opened up my workshop as part of the Severn Vale Art Trail. Come along to see examples of my work, to learn a bit about traditional upholstery, to see chair caning in action and maybe just to get some free refreshments!

This project was challenging to say the least. Working with such large heavy pieces of fabric is difficult enough, but for them to be backed with foam too, was even harder. These were originally made in a factory with specialist machines, so recreating them in my little workshop required a lot of thinking, planning and testing. But I got there in the end!
