Repair job on this captains chair.
Literally unusable - the back and spindles were falling apart and split, decades of grime in the spindle holes and what looked like several very dodgy repairs using nails, screws, tape!, and car filler!
Several spindles were split.
The seat (elm if you wanted to know) is warped through decades of use and abuse.
So….
Took it apart to properly asses the damage.
Removed the old ‘repairs’.
Cleaned off the grime.
Repaired spindles and seat holes that had blown out by splicing in like for like wood species.
Had to make adjustments to spindle sizing to allow for warp in seat.
Dry fit to ensure fit, then a very nervous glue up involving epoxy for strength.
Clean up joints and squeeze out of glue.
Touch up newly spliced in wood to colour match and age.
Wax and polish.
A lot of work - but chair now looks beautiful and you can sit in it again!
