i have one more table to do eventually same as this , but i think this turned out fantastically .. i first removed the wood which is in sections so had to re glue after sanding and staining .. the table although heavy and awkward was not too bad , sand down , paint in red oxide to resist rust , then using metal paint matt to paint it , and to keep it looking good a mat varnish finish .. so much nicer in matt rather than the usual slap gloss all over and wait for it to go dull and horrible ..

another rusty revival , got these bench parts when buying a cast table ( that will be the next post ) the legs were broken and the wood completely rotten . seemed a waste to throw it all . so had a brain fart ,and it said use the back and tart it up will only take a few hours ... yeah right a few hours to sand down by hand . 2 layers of metal matt paint , then using matt basic paint for the flowers , 5 layers for each color , topped it off with a coat of clear matt varnish . the wood curved bit was the only salvageable wood left from the bench . the bottom piece is the top of an old fence found lying around ... both sanded super smooth ..3 coats of stain for a deep color finish and a few coats of bees wax ... till we have non shiney lovely garden decor piece

little bit of tweaking to do after the rain ... but very happy with this little rusty rescue ... it all actually went to the original plan for once ha ha ha a rusty find off neighbour , a bit of wood from an old fence someone threw away , with a bit of work and basic tools , namely detail sander ,screwdriver , wire brush , add just paint ,screws and wood stain , rusty turns to wonderful

this is why i love messing around with wood .. from rough and ready barely firewood , to silky smooth with a depth of rich colour , and all it takes is a bit of effort and it has a new life
yes the lovely wood started as the naff wood lol

first "little project finished " it was simple but complicated but still a nice rusty rescue .
pain bit was matt finish rather than slap on some shiny gloss ,me and my silly ideas , always makes things difficult ha ha ha
the lessons i have learnt doing this , the rust and red oxide side was a pain because of the design but easy enough .. modern water based paint to get the lovely matt finish i wanted is not , its very open to chips and scratches and needs finishing after with a protective layer .. clear matt varnish or lacquer is definitely needed .. on this project given its complicated scroll work i chose spray lacquer to get good coverage but used 5 rattle cans .. not a perfect job but i think a new life and 100% better for this well built older piece of kit . took ages to do and can see why sandblast and other paint is normally used .. but as with everything i do its recycled , basic tools and spend time doing it . the journey is just as important as the end result for me .

good weather is here again and time to get some refurbing done ..
easy start this year putting some platers out
but do not want the pesky cats crapping in them
so a bit of chicken wire cut incertain places and bent upwards and outwards .. makes for a non cat bum friendly environment ..the flowers when growing will find their way through the gaps ..
also make the soil level below bird access level

a bit artsy on this .
my mum has a silver mirror no one in the family wanted and not really worth that much even though its silver ..
the rear of the mirror is pretty much dinged to heck .
soi had this idea and hunted round for ages for the perfect size picture frame and found it at a local charity shop.
to make this i cut up some card board , about a centimetre bigger than the mirror outer edge , 4 layers so it was deeper than the mirror and a bit more , used some left over spray glue to join the together .
back to the charity shop for a velvet type blouse for 50p .
big glue tip here , when gluing fabric on to something ,do not push it down , lay it gently onto the glue area , a very light touch down
and it will stick without glue bleed through ( yes i made the mistake myself lol )
i cut a square in the mirror recess and used some stickypads to hold the mirror in place .
be careful with the glass when assembling (unlike me who now has to find a replacement ) and a lovely patinated mirror now becomes a lovely reflected picture
i am going to add a little saying at the bottom "imperfect can be beautiful " the though a patinated mirror is beautiful if not perfect like a new one and so is the person looking in the mirror

so after a quiet bit going to be starting some upgrading again
so first off i ve been giving my kitchen a bit of a makeover .
biggest bit here all this work has cost me just under £30
going off the cupboard doors nothing has been done in here since the early 80's
as you can see from the first pics it was pretty much crappy
so to start i have been gathering lots of parts needed and there is loads out there for free if you just keep an eye out for stuff and have a clear image of the result you want .
so cupboard doors all free ,just waited for enough doors at once (with spares ) from someone and were barely a couple of years old .. super high quality floor tiles from an office , i got to choose from a room barely used and they are in as good as new condition ... again with spares all free
a big addition i was very lucky with the pine unit i will probably paint in summer , fantastic skip find (always ask permission to remove )
again the light lovely unit from the same office as the tiles another great free addition
so the spend was simply paint ,spray glue , some brushes and all done with very basic tools and just patient hard work .
never perfect but i think its the best under £30 makeover lol

and now the final finished (well nearly ) product .. apart from a lend of my brothers chop saw for some bits basically the big boards . all this has been done with very basic tools .. total cost for pretty much all pictured is under £200 .. about £1000 worth of effort lol ... main cost are lots of paint .. lots of screws ohhh so many screws lol , all screwed not nailed for easy adjustment ,replacement etc . i bought an electric plane and lots of sand paper lol .. all inc in the £200 budget . 99% recycled / reclaimed wood . building sites when asked as well as individuals are all happy for you to take their waste wood . remember always ask or its theft even from a skip ..
and now all decking no more cat p**p morning patrol woooohooo
so if i can do this with just basic tools so can you
