Concaves an a exciting new building style by Furniture maker and artisan wood guy David Mackay . Founder of sticks and stones furniture and Wood Art ltd a localy recognised artist David turns to larger projects to full fill his artistic requirements and delivers a truly special result. Concave’s buildings are created with concave curved exterior walls on all sides to give a stunning shape and unique ambience made from local Scottish timbers but crafted in a format yet to be seen.

The concave shape of the building gives it an especially interesting aesthetic quality along with a encapsulating feel more like a cocoon than a cabin . From the outside the perfect concave curves allow the eye to observe the full symmetry of the cabin at the same time the concave walls blend seamlessly with the windows, doors and fixtures straight roof lines blended with curved walls in flawless balance .. When inside the building looking out it flows up towards you connecting you to the ground then up and over your head giving you a feeling of encasement and protection and a connection to nature.

The internal walls of the cabin are of course flat however the ceiling of the cabin blends seamlessly in an an arch with the front wall and then ripples out accros the ceiling to the back wall because after all who wants a flat boring ceilinng. This unique ceiling design allows for spectacular light display possibilities over its textured and undulating surface. Constructed from natural materials but with a stylish and contemporary look. The building has been hand sanded and an oiled finish to give it a glass like touch this only adds tactile appreciation and to the over all ascetics.

Every exterior larch cladding board and every timber used in the construction has come from a Forestry Commission fsc plantation and the larch had come from 6 miles away from our sawmill near the village of kippen ever board has been lovingly milled on our sawmill. The larch cladding board has been fixed to the cabin with spax stainless steel Torques head screws the highest quality fixings on the market these screws will not only fix this cabins first layer of cladding but they will serve as the fixings for the cladding for the second layer in 25 to 30 years time. Various finishes can be applied to the larch cladding or it can be left to naturally silver in colour.

The cabin is fully lined with Scot’s pine 16mm tongue and groove cladding on the front and gable ends the pine boards give a warm glow even in dull light and have been sanded and oiled with osmo oil to give a smooth feel and lasting durable surface. The pine lining also gives u felling of being surround by wood and natural products along with a nice arroma especially on warm days . Behind the pine is rectcel 40mm double lined insulation board to provide a cool house in the summer and warm house in the winter

The cabin also comes fully wired for 12 V systems or 240 V systems. The cabin comes with UPVC double glazing window units and french doors that are manufactured In Ireland. The Guttering and roof barge has been cleverly constructed from larch to hide the roof for view and the guttering is entirely concealed inside the larch facia of the building so no plastic or steel can been seen from the ground

The furnishings for the cabin can be undertaken by our furniture department Sticks and Stones furniture a well established artisan Furniture company started by David mackay With customers ranging from Historick Scotland the Smith Art Gallery and many of happy private customers with work as far as spain the Netherlands and the USA working with products as far ranging as timber stone metal and glass we can creat a completely unique space inside a completely unique building everything you can imagine .

Last year about summer time Helena Turner and her daughter Kirsty Inglis asked me to make a Comenrative bench for Mr Turner and that it be sighted at there favourite spot just up the road for the house near Kirriemuir.

The bench is made from our own milled oak from the village of Thornhill . The tree had blew down many years before and had lay in the feild absorbing character just waiting fir me

So after some design thoughts we produced and sited Helena’s bench on 3 oak Sleeprs and fixed it from underneath to make it none removable

Helena is delighted with the bench and it looks great in its space

Thanks Helena for letting us make this can’t wait to sit on it again me self In a few years

This month Sticks and Stones Furniture has been featured in LIVING magazine. LIVING is a complimentary luxury magazine hand delivered to selected postcodes in Scotland.

The piece was written by Maggie Ritchie a journalist for LIVING a few months ago and they have started delivering them last week.

Must say a big thank you to Maggie for involving me in the wonderful collection of stunning Scottish artist celebrated in LIVING magazine. It’s been really nice to see my work in LIVING I must say I’m quite proud : )

I would also like to thank Duncan Caracatus Clark for the amazing camera work . Duncan was a joy to work with and I feel really captured the furniture so well for the magazine.

Where do I start, thank you Geordie for all your help , I would not have had as much fun over the last year it was not for working with Yourself nor would I have learned so much in the process .

And a big thank you to my mum and dad for all there support for the last 39 years you guys are the best

Since the magazine doesn’t actually tell what anything is I’ll fill in the blanks

The sculptures are made from bog oak 1800 years old from the north of Scotland .... they have been hand crafted to form and I call them Elegance (available as a set)

The first throne is at Richard Coopers house along with our barn and other creations . It’s made from elm from the bontanic gardens in Ediburgh (taking commissions)

The Stools are whiskey barrel staves with spalted beech top from Thornhill (taking commissions )

The mirror is Burr Elm crafted from one piece and beautifully naturally shaped ( available)

The 2nd throne is called The 3 curves . It’s made from Burr Elm and Ash. This is the 3rd of these thrones in this shape . The first is on manhattan island in America and the 2nd went to London England (available)

Thanks david

The wave

Oak bench for David Cooke from Newton mearns as a Christmas gift for his wife

The oak for this bench was milled by self and Geordie back in 2016 on a day with about 8 inches of snow falling through day . Stunning views are to be had from chainsaw milling as u can see

Then we seasoned the oak for 4 years to achieve a stable board to produce the bench with such odd construction lines required a well seasoned bit of timber

The bench has been finished with osmo uv oil that if kept fresh will remain its look for many years

Hope you enjoy your bench for many years to come thanks David

Hello Kristi McBlair Brooks

A months before new year we sent this amazing piece of Scotland to live on Kristi’s wall in America as a stylish mantle piece above her fire place

After Kristi had received the mantel see sent me a lovely email thanking me for it and asking for a the full story of the piece of wood it’s beginning how I found it ect and if she could have a photo of the man that made it as well

So as we have had Duncan Clark in last week taking photos for two publications we are in in the coming months one is , The Full Circle , a journal for the association of Scottish hardwood sawmillers ( ASHA) and the other a popular home a lifestyle magazine called Living Magazine . So since all this is happing and we have a nice photo of me and this is very rare as far as I’m concerned hear is the portrait shot for the magazines

Hope it looks good next to the mantel lol . If you need a frame for it I can help with that : )

Thanks again Kristi
