Yellow weather warning for thunderstorms issued:
A yellow warning for thunderstorms has been issued for much of the south-west of England by the Met Office until 23:59 BST.

The warning covers Bath and North East Somerset, Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole, Bristol, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, North Somerset, Plymouth, Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Torbay, Wiltshire and parts of Hampshire.

The Met Office said some flooding of a few homes and businesses was "possible, leading to some damage to buildings or structures".
It added that some short-term loss of power and other services was "likely", and there was a "good chance" driving conditions would be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail.

Problems affecting travel could lead to longer journey times by car and bus, with delays to train services possible, it added.

Forecasters said that, while many places would miss the worst conditions, where thunderstorms did occur, they brought the potential for torrential downpours of rain, frequent lightning, large hail and strong, gusty winds.

Hottest May day ever recorded in UK!

In the last few moments we’ve had the 13:30 BST temperatures reported and the maximum so far is now 33.5C at Heathrow.

Not only does this make it the hottest day in May on record, but also the hottest bank holiday Monday on record (exceeding the 33.3C seen in the August bank holiday in 2019).

Along with the warmest May night on record we saw last night, that’s three new major records we’ve seen today.

Overnight a provisional record was set for the warmest overnight temperature in May - 19.4C, also in London.

Temperatures will continue to rise over the next couple of hours and even away from the south-east of England, it’s hot out there with temperatures widely into the mid-to high 20s.

UK long range weather forecast:

Tuesday 26 May - Thursday 4 June:
Temperatures will fall through this period to be above normal but not as hot as through the preceding Bank Holiday weekend. With high pressure expected to remain in place for much of the UK, fine weather is likely to continue for most places. Some patchy rain may affect the far north at times and perhaps a few showers in the far south. Temperatures are expected to be above normal overall, feeling very warm at times with light winds.

Friday 5 June - Friday 19 June:
High pressure is likely to bring fair weather for most at first. Rain and showers are still possible at times, mainly across Northern Ireland and Scotland. As we head towards mid-June, more mixed conditions are likely with spells of rain and showers. Drier weather is expected between any bouts of wetter weather. These drier interludes will tend to last longer across the south and east of England. Temperatures are most likely to be near or slightly above average overall, with some warm or very warm weather possible.
