A package has been delivered to our site address on Bush Heath Lane addressed to Isla Cooper.

Does anyone know her? The address is ours so it’s a bit puzzling especially as it has only just been made official.

Thanks

Tried this for the first time. Never felled a Davidia before either and didn’t know how the timber would behave. It was leaning backwards and and we had a Tirfor on it. Saw was good but the vertical cuts wouldn’t go straight, maybe the timber/grain but came over nicely.

This would be about 1980. I’m 21yrs and taking down a large Lime in Lyme Park when it was part of Stockport MBC’s parks estate…. No PPE no fancy climbing gear but the principles were all the same. Love it!

I’m not an expert but when I heard about the loss of maybe 50% of rural hedgehogs since the millennium it made me prick my ears up. People are doing their bit in Harbury maybe more will join in.

It’s reported that lack of habitat and poisoning are two of the main issues. It’s always sad to see ‘road-kill’ but those who are old enough will recognise that we hardly ever see a squashed hedgehog on the roads anymore. This indicates that there are many fewer around. 😥

The first thing I did was to make sure the hogs could get into the garden. A gap under or through a fence about 150 x 150mm (6” x 6”) is enough.

A shallow bowl each evening with appropriate food, not bread and milk as it makes them poorly!! I use dry kitten food (chicken flavour). A similar bowl with fresh water. Bingo within days towards autumn last year they arrived….and keep coming now they’re out of hibernation.

It seems they naturally eat slugs, worm and other gribblies in the garden and to an extent negates the need for slug-pellets (now banned) which poison hogs!

Lots of hog related information….follow the https://www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk/

Maybe even more people could encourage these native British wild animals?

A couple of views from amongst the branches at Greenhill Farm, Dwppers Bridge, towards Butt Lane and Churchlands on the horizon. Lovely skies although it was quitea windy up there on Tuesday. 🌳

We were asked to remove some wind damaged limbs from the lovely cedar which graces Warwickshire College Group’s Moreton Hall. It is the tree that many young tree surgeons learnt and practiced their climbing techniques and skills. Flinn Dorgan who did the climbing today remembers his time at the college and using this tree for practical training. If you look at the last photo you can just see him amongst the branches dealing with the broken branches.

To keep your lawn alive and strong -
1 - don’t water it
2 - don’t cut it short in hot weather

If you water it the water on the surface encourages the grass to produce surface roots as it seeks out the moisture. In the heat/dry the surface of the soil dries out first so you water it again and again and again. This is not sustainable and produces a weak sward. If you don’t water it the roots are forced downwards to find moisture. This makes the sward strong and resilient during dry spells.

If you cut the grass short in hot spells the soil is more exposed to the sun’s heat and moisture evaporates starving the grass of the moisture it needs. The leaves of the grass shade the ground and help it to retain moisture. The clippings you remove contain moisture to so you’re actually taking water away from the grass plants worsening the situation.

I hope this is helpful.

My heart is 💔 for the self-employed. There are about 5 million nationally.

Hard times ahead for me and alot of people I know.

They don’t have a premises - no £10k grant.

They don’t employ staff - no 80% of their wage covered.

They aren’t employed - no 80% of their wage covered.

They can apply for universal credit and get a maximum of £300 but if you live with a partner who’s lucky enough to have a wage then they’ll get nothing.

They haven’t been given definitive direction to close, clients are cancelling and other workers and non-workers are mounting pressure and shame on them to close - the same people who are getting grants and their staff are getting 80% of their wages paid.

They know they have to do social distancing, see photo below. But they are a few days away from zero income.

And these people have built their businesses from zero with unimaginable amounts of blood, sweat and tears.

Please be compassionate and empathetic to your freelancer friends, their world is crumbling around them and they are haven’t been thrown the same lifeline as others. They are being forced to make difficult decisions and don’t need any more shame from others.

What a way to spend my birthday yesterday. Took the top off a large poplar in Bishops Itchington. Good work from Flinn Dorgan managing the lowering ropes and the work on the ground.

Dismantling a large collapsed willow at Moreton Morrell yesterday. Smaller branches chipped. Main limbs craned away (over 8 tonnes) and the decaying trunk left behind as a monolith for wildlife habitat.
