From this date on, upholstered furniture cannot be disposed of safely in general waste or landfills, and should be treated differently from general waste. As a result, the items can't be recycled, reused, or repurposed. It is safer to dispose of these soft furnishings by incineration instead.
So Leaving your old office upholstered furniture outside as part of your general waste will prevent your waste disposal company from collecting these items.
When these items are not disposed of properly, they could contain Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) that are harmful to wildlife, the environment, and humans. EPA investigations have revealed that foam of upholstered seating and textiles that can come into contact with the foam contain POPs and other hazardous chemicals.
Your business should:
1. Assume any item of upholstered furniture may contain POPs, unless it can be demonstrated otherwise
2. Segregate any upholstered items from all other types of waste – do not contaminate the other waste types with this material
3. Where possible remove affected POP materials from non-affected materials
4. Notify your waste management company of the material to be collected.
