Isaac’s room has been carefully designed for his personality and also his special needs.

He is obsessed with lights, and now he can control them with an easy to use ‘kinetic switch’ (for the lights over his bed) or by simply sliding open the wardrobe doors to trigger the internal lighting, making everything easier for him to see.

The bed has been placed near the window allowing by him to look out; with space at the foot of the bed for his electric piano. The overall layout, with storage up high, maximises floor space for him to crawl around and play, and to make manoeuvring wheelchairs and other supportive equipment easier.

At floor level, sliding doors are much easier for him to open than hinged ones, whether he is kneeling on the floor or using his wheelchair.

The mirrors on the doors mean he can see his posture when trying to stand with the aid of the wall mounted bars.

There is plenty of storage for clothes and toys where he can reach them. Also medical equipment, nappies etc, in the generous upper cupboards which have been designed to ensure the doors can open without hitting the ceiling hoist tracks.

By integrating grab handles into the furniture itself we have avoided the clinical feel of using standard-issue white metal grab handles. Our integrated handles also provide a place to hang control mechanisms for the adjustable bed or chair, where he can easily reach them.

Accessible shelving and a rounded edge of the desk have been placed around the bed to accommodate all the things he needs at night including a specialist video monitor.

I enjoy working for this client. I love walking into a household where you see people taking care over how they live, to enjoy life for its own sake, not for show or just for Instagram.

Am I making sense? It’s a mixture of humbly making the most of what you’ve got, while understanding the value and expense of carefully chosen interventions to make daily life work better.

We have competed 3 projects so far in this Sheffield house, with another in the pipeline. This one is their renovated closet and the brief was to maximise space.

They were open to my suggestions on materials (Cashmere ‘Gris Coco’ melamine face boards by and matching shaker style sliding doors), and to the use of lighting to enlarge the space and make everything easier to find.

Here we have used warm white 24V LED strip lights and aluminium profiles by together with their discrete wireless PIR sensor which turns on all the lights when it senses the movement of the door opening. The lights smoothly glow on, and then off again after a suitable period of inactivity. This little detail - not having to worry about finding a switch and remembering to turn it off again - is one of many design choices that can make everyday life at home a delight.
