In a world where football is dominated by superstars, big money exchanges and a stratospheric level of importance to so many, it's difficult to sometimes make any sense of this thing that we all love so much. But there was one man who could cut through all the noise and bring football back down to its core, a game that is here for enjoyment and the pure love of kicking a ball around. For generations of so many football fans, John Motson is the voice which accompanies some of the happiest memories they hold close to their heart.
50 years. 10 World Cups. 6 World Cup finals. 10 Euros. 200 England games. 2500+ club games. 29 FA Cup finals. 9 sheepskin coats.
It all just speaks for itself really doesn't it.
When 90 minutes was called at his final match, commentating on Crystal Palace’s win over West Bromwich, he was invited onto the pitch and given a standing ovation by the supporters in attendance. We dare say he’ll be getting a standing ovation by every supporter in every ground in the country this weekend.
In the words of Gary Lineker on the eve of the great man's retirement from the game, “Well played Motty, well played”. We couldn’t have said it better ourselves. The best to ever don a microphone. Thank you John Motson for everything you have given to the game of football.
