This wonderful project was so special to me, the lady who contacted me showed me her unfinished and very much lived in sofa. This is a unique and incredibly special piece that her late husband designed and built from scratch.
She asked if I could restore it and keep as much of the original William Morris fabric he chose as possible. Although the fabric was mostly in great shape, there was critically torn and ripped sections that couldn’t be restored.
We discussed her options and decided to use the surviving fabric from the frame to repair and replace the damaged cushion covers. We then sourced the plain fabric to match the back drop for this vintage Golden Lily colourway.
The frame was stripped to the bare wood and all the foam and webbing was replaced for comfort and structure.
I loved working on this unusual piece and it was lovely to experience the creative engineering that went into his solid design. This man was once a tailor amongst many other skills and he held an incredible ability for creativity and considered engineering. It was genuinely an honour to see his design and restore this for his wonderful wife!
