Light My Space provides specialist advice and custom lighting solutions for people’s homes and properties. We want to share our in-depth knowledge of lighting and provide access to incredible lighting fixtures and technologies - ‘the art of the possible’ - to enhance people's work and living spaces. After 10 successful years running our own management consultancy business, we felt we had had enou

gh of corporate life and wanted to do something that more enjoyable, interesting and that deepened our roots and connections where we live. James had started up Light My Space in 2007 and was already working on projects(between corporate contracts) providing lighting solutions for friends and family and then getting commissions from homeowners and small businesses. So in 2017, we decided to fully dedicate our time and effort to lighting design. We enjoy the challenge of finding lighting options for individuals and their unique spaces. Decades of project management experience gained from corporate roles means we know how important a client's requirements are; that they are busy and want a great result with good communication and minimal inconvenience. A key aspect of getting this right is measuring and identifying the required light level to ensure that options are appropriate for tasks, social activities and relaxation. It also means that we need to be available to show and discuss lights in the evening and work around a client's work and family commitments.

Running a small local business has meant getting to know wonderful people along the way. It’s a great feeling to know we have made a difference to our clients and to architects, property developers and electricians by solving lighting problems for them. Perhaps though, our most impactful legacy might be the mitigation of light pollution on nocturnal wildlife and working with passionate ecologists and project managers to ensure the wellbeing of these animals.

💛 Thank you everyone for your support over the last decade – and if you need any advice over the next months, please do get in touch and we’ll do our best to shed some light on the issue before we close our doors!

As we wind down our business, we want to celebrate some of our favourite projects! There have been many, but let's whittle it down...

Ira: "I'm remembering the Keystone project. Our first barn conversion kicked off a flurry of barn conversion projects. Every one was different to the previous one, due to the nature of their construction and original purpose, and each one had its unique challenges. What makes these truly special is that, to the owners, it’s a labour of love and every project has brought life back to a building and joy to the people living in and using these historically important spaces."

James: "I'm remembering the Salisbury Secret Spitfire memorial – it was an incredible opportunity to work on an iconic local landmark that means so much to so many people. The team behind the memorial (Chris Whalley & Ethem Cetintas) were so passionate, it was infectious and inspired me to solve problems and learn about vintage aviation lighting that I would never have dreamt of doing. It has become an icon of the city I live and work in and it lifts my spirits whenever I pass by."

What both of our favourite projects have in common is that they are great examples of why lighting matters; to focus attention on something important and show it to the world in its best light. It’s why Light My Space has meant so much to us.

🦇 It's essential that any area in use by bats and owls is thoroughly assessed before artificial lighting is changed or added, even if you are not in an AONB (Area of Natural Beauty) or designated Dark Skies area.

This helps to protect the wildlife in our country AND gives your project the ultimate green light 🟢

As AI becomes embedded into lighting control platforms, it means systems can learn from usage patterns, daylight availability, and space utilisation. Which means multi-use spaces suddenly get a lot more flexible and easy to shift between their different purposes. Could this be something that improves your spaces in 2026?

How do you feel about AI in your lighting systems?

Fittings, bulbs, systems, cabling and controls are varied and complex, but seeking out expert knowledge helps avoid any nasty surprises. Lighting designers are ready for your questions - so make sure to ask them!

Test their product knowledge and request specifications. Ask your lighting designer to show you lumières and controls, and ask that they discuss colour temperatures and other available options (e.g. glare reduction) for the light sources you’ve selected. Make sure you’re happy with the quality of light and the effect it will create for your space.
