I reckon that turned out okay!

Starburst with a light wood inlay between segments... That made it a while lot more complicated!

The dark wood is Indian rosewood, which had a fantastic hint of purple in it which unfortunately the camera doesn't pick up well. And believe it or not, the light wood is black walnut (but the sapwood, which comes from the outer rings of the log). I used it because I didn't have any other light wood veneer.๐Ÿ˜‚

I absolutely love how this one turned out with some lacquer on it!

This was a fun one! Swipe right for 'before photos'. Or it might be left. Not actually sure.

A customer approached me with a family heirloom gramaphone box that they wanted converting to a bedding box. It needed all the old interior taking out, and replacing with a oak veneered plywood lining.

Both me and the customer are very happy with how it turned out, if you want something like this converting get in touch today!

Coasters! Just about the simplest project possible (literally just a square of wood).... But if you are creative the possibilities are endless!

I've made lots of unique coasters like this over the past month, it's kind of been an ongoing project. I've loved the opportunity to be so creative.

This one is ripple sycamore and walnut veneers, on an MDF substrate. The MDF is to make sure it doesn't move and warp in humidity and temperature fluctuations.

Here's a couple of photos of a bookshelf I made a month or two ago for my sister. The Danish oil finish really makes the figure of this maple pop๐Ÿ˜.

It had to fit in a specific space under a desk so needed custom making. It's made out of maple and walnut, with through dovetails on the 4 corners, and sliding dovetails to attach the shelves to the sides. Pretty simple overall, but there were still complications.๐Ÿ˜ฌ

One of the issues I had was that my planer(a machine for flattening pieces of wood) wasn't side enough to fit the components on, so I had to only thickness it, and hope it didn't turn out too warped or cupped. (A thicknesser will just turn a warped board into a thinner warped board๐Ÿ‘Ž, whereas a planer turns it into a flat board๐Ÿ‘). As it was they turned out a bit cupped (warped across the grain), which meant there were some gaps in the sliding dovetails (as you can see in the photos).

Overall still turned out pretty nice I thought! โœจ

I haven't posted in a while, but that doesn't mean I haven't been busy!

These are a few photos of my latest commission, which was for some dovetailed boxes, and some close up mats for card magic.

The boxes are made out of American black walnut, and are constructed using mitred dovetails, which are very strong, as well as good looking. They have matching brass hinges and locks, which is a classic colour combination with walnut.

The base of the trays use walnut veneered MDF to minimise wood movement. If I was to make the bases out of solid walnut, it is likely that they would warp or cup over time, as well as expand and contract across the grain. This is an example of where MDF excels!

Today I went out to the workshop to tidy it... But I don't think it's any tidier than it was this morning.๐Ÿคฆ

I ended up milling a lot of smallish, awkward shaped pieces for some end grain chopping boards, just to clear out my racks of scrap wood a bit. Should be enough for 2 or 3 boards.

I've been a bit quiet on instagram recently, but hoping to post photos of some of my recent projects soon!

I genuinely think this is my favourite project to date.

It's just a box. But some projects you just pour your heart into, and this is one of them. Sometimes it's very refreshing to not work to a budget... The time I spent on this doesn't bear thinking about!๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ˜‚.

I made it in order to practice my veneering skills, as I've recently started using veneer more frequently. The box itself is veneered MDF, with ripple sycamore and wenge edging.

I couldn't decide what to do for the lid, so ended up just messing around with veneer to create something that looked good. The lids orange coloured veneer is cocobolo, which is a rare but fantastic looking wood. The edge around it is wenge again, and the handle is maple.

I also used a finish new to me on this one, which is the sanding sealer by Chestnut that supplies, which was reccomended to me by last week. (He makes fantastic stuff, go check out his page). Finished with a topcoat of wax, it gives an incredible looking sheen.โœจ

Finished up another comission... A tray in American black walnut.

I enjoyed making this as it gave me the operrtunity to practice my veneering skills (the base is MDF with home cut constructional veneer). Constructional veneer is thicker than normal veneer, typically around 3mm. Standard decorative veneer is normally 0.6mm๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Overall I like how it turned out, especially the base. The spectacular grain and colour of black walnut will always have a special place in my heart.๐Ÿ˜

And the console table is finally finished! It is now up for sale, message me for details.

This is my longest project to date, taking over 80 hours to complete. It is constructed out of maple and walnut, which is a classic contrasting combination.

Details includes tapers on the legs, string inlay, and a 10ยฐ slant on the drawer fronts. This makes cutting the dovetails for the drawers significantly harder!

It utilises a number of joints, including mortice and tenons, wedged mortice and tenons, through dovetails, half blind dovetails and dowels. These each have their unique strengths and weaknesses, so when used in the right appplication they all work well together.

I also take custom comissions, again get in touch if you're interested in having wooden items or furniture made to order.

Making some good progress on the console table!

The main frame is glued up, and I'm currently working on string inlay in the top (string inlaying is laying a contrasting strip of wood into a groove, for a decorative effectโœจ, see second photo).

Stick around to see how this awesome project turns out!

Finally seeing a bit of progress on the hall/console table!

I've heard a number of weeks away over the summer, so it's taken a long time to get to just this stage. ๐Ÿ˜ด

Another reason it's taking so long is the mortice and tenons... Without a dedicated morticer, I have to resort to drilling out the bulk of the mortices waste with a drill, and fine tune it with a set of chisels. Very time consuming!๐Ÿ˜

The tenons aren't so bad, I normally cut the shoulders on the table saw (so it sits cleanly on the mortice), then cut out the rest of the waste with a bandsaw, and fine tune it with a chisel, resulting in a perfect fit (most of the time)๐Ÿ‘Œ

Can't wait to continue working on this when I next get some free time at home ๐Ÿ˜‚.

Well this was a fun one! Read the post if you'd like something made of one of these slabs, or if you'd like one of them.

I picked up a section of an oak log๐ŸŒณ while camping in Wales (about a metre long), and took it home with me. Then I managed to find someone to cut it into slabs.

The reason I liked this one so much is because it had a number of branches/forks coming off it, which typically means the grain you'll find inside the log will be crazy looking ๐Ÿ˜(like it's turned out!).

This oak will take a while to dry, (possibly up to 3 years!) depending on whether I can find space for it inside, where it'll dry quicker.

--If you'd like something made of it please get in touch (coffee tables, serving boards, boxes etc... The possibilities are endless!)

--If you'd just like a slab, again get in touch for prices.
