today is an Eastern Bordered Straw (Heliothis nubigera) found in Blackwood by Kevin Hewitt. This is the first Gwent & fourth Welsh record for this rare migrant moth.

There was an influx of this species across England during the heatwave, so great to get one in Wales too!

Many thanks to Kevin for the record & photo, submitted via the LERC Wales App: https://www.sewbrec.org.uk/recording/app

This species has declined drastically, due in part to historic harvesting for medical purposes. It is now designated "Near Threatened" at a global level, and is strictly protected in the UK.

Many thanks to Mathew Andrews for the great record, submitted via www.sewbrecord.org.uk.
