We were delighted to be awarded a new project by Plymouth City Bus to create a communal break area for staff at the Royal Parade location having successfully completed two projects at their other sites.

Our design, refurbishment and furniture fit out, created a space that provides a calm and practical environment for drivers to prepare food and relax during their break-times.

The kitchen zone is clean and contemporary, while the bistro style tables and chairs provide some practicality and flexibility to the space. We also installed meeting booths, that provide a degree of privacy for ad-hoc meetings.

The new space is bright, practical and calming—an ideal retreat for the City Bus team between busy shifts.

A refreshed staff room can completely change the energy of a school, and Goosewell Primary Academy is a perfect example of how thoughtful design can uplift the people who give so much every day.

Goosewell Primary Academy asked us to reimagine their 100sqm staff room into a place where colleagues could relax, recharge and connect. The brief called for a vibrant yet calming environment, with a mix of furniture styles to support dining, collaboration and quiet moments away from the classroom.

The finished space brings together soft pastels, rich oak tones and a bright, welcoming atmosphere. A new white‑gloss kitchen and a large communal dining table create a natural hub for shared breaks and team conversations. Three dedicated soft‑seating zones offer quieter corners for focused work, one‑to‑ones or simply taking a breath during a busy school day.

Their Headteacher said; “We approached Engage to propose a new and vibrant staff breakout space for somewhere our staff can feel relaxed and comfortable. We were amazed at the design and 3D visuals, extremely pleased with the products proposed and ultimately very happy with the result.”

Projects like this highlight how much a well‑designed environment can support wellbeing, collaboration and culture—especially in education settings where staff spaces are often overlooked.

Why Workplace Acoustics Matter More Than Ever

Acoustics have become one of the most frequently underestimated factors in workplace design, shaping everything from concentration and wellbeing to how confidently teams collaborate in an open plan environment. We explore the challenges and solutions around this hot topic.

Open plan offices were meant to bring people together, but without acoustic planning they often do the opposite. Noise is now one of the top workplace complaints, with research consistently showing that poor acoustics reduce concentration, increase stress and lower productivity.

The reality is simple:
• Teams need places where they can talk freely.
• Individuals need places where they can think clearly.
• Everyone needs an environment that supports—not competes with—their work.

Our team have various solutions that can help reduce the problem of noise in the workplace.

The Building Blocks of an Acoustic Smart Office

Effective acoustic design isn’t about one big solution; it’s about layering the right elements so the space works holistically. Some of the most impactful approaches include:

1. Acoustic Pods & Meeting Booths
Pods create instant quiet zones without the need for construction. They’re ideal for:
• Focused individual work
• Private calls
• Small team huddles
• Hybrid meetings

Our partner-manufacturers such as Senator and Moventi offer pods with engineered acoustic performance, integrated ventilation and lighting, and options that blend seamlessly into open plan environments.

2. High Back and Enclosed Soft Seating

Soft seating with high sides or wraparound forms helps absorb sound and create micro zones within larger spaces. These are perfect for:
• Informal meetings
• One to ones
• Quiet touchdown work

Ranges like Senator’s Haven collection show how seating can double as acoustic architecture.

3. Acoustic Panels, Baffles and Wall Treatments

These solutions reduce reverberation and soften the overall soundscape. They’re especially effective in:

• Large open offices
• Reception areas
• Breakout spaces
• Meeting rooms with hard surfaces

Panels can be ceiling hung, wall mounted or freestanding, and increasingly come in design led finishes that enhance the aesthetic as much as the acoustics.

4. Zoning Through Furniture

Thoughtful placement of storage, screens and collaborative furniture helps shape how sound moves through a space. This is a subtle but powerful way to:
• Separate quiet and active zones
• Reduce sound bleed
• Improve wayfinding and flow

Good zoning reduces the need for constant behavioural policing. Spaces naturally guide people to use them appropriately. Every organisation has its own rhythm, culture and acoustic challenges. Our role is to translate those into a workspace that supports people at their best.

We find that the most effective acoustic controls go completely unnoticed. Staff feel the difference immediately, even if they can’t quite put their finger on why!

Should your workspace be too noisy and distracting, please contact one of our team and we will be happy guide you through the options.

In June 2025, we completed our third project with Plymouth Argyle Community Trust as part of the multi-million-pound redevelopment of the Brickfields site, providing interior design, furniture specification, supply and fit out.

Our team was tasked with designing an attractive, accessible and adaptable community space. We proposed a selection of contemporary yet practical and durable furniture, with wooden café style small tables, larger communal tables, colourful chairs and relaxed soft seating areas.

The Hub at Foulston Park in Devonport, has become a fantastic facility for the local community. Plymouth Argyle Academy, Plymouth Argyle Women’s Team, Argyle Community Trust and Plymouth Albion all use the facilities at Foulston Park.

Our furniture selection worked perfectly with the building design -resulting in a modern, comfortable and flexible space for the local community.

Their project lead said; ”Vince and the team at Engage Workplace undertook a thorough consultation with us and understood our brief exactly. They proposed furniture solutions and interior graphics that portrayed our ethos and values and enabled us to have a truly flexible, adaptable and quality environment. We are very proud to open this fantastic facility to the local community.“

We teamed up with Airey & Coles to reimagine their workspace at Ashleigh Court, Langage Business Park, near Plymouth.

The brief called for a thoughtful fit-out solution, shaped by the nuances of engineering-led teamwork. We delivered bespoke larger workstations with streamlined dividing screens, allowing clearer communication across each team hub. Acoustic hanging panels add visual appeal while gently separating breakout zones-complete with a table tennis table for well-earned breaks.

The result was to create a bright, modern interior, designed around practical collaboration and focused tasks.

We’re always looking for new ways to create privacy, focus, and adaptable space without compromising the flow of an office.

A new solution from our manufacturing partner, ØRN Furnitureembodies that approach. The Converse Station provides a quiet, enclosed environment that enhances productivity, sparks creativity, and offers a moment of calm within open‑plan settings.

Acoustic materials reduce surrounding noise, helping teams step into a more focused space whenever they need it.

Available in two, four, and six‑seater configurations, it adapts easily to different workstyles- from quick catch‑ups to longer collaborative sessions.

Optional power and media integrations add another layer of functionality, allowing the booth to flex with the demands of the modern workplace.

ØRN offer a wide choice of one‑or two‑tone fabric finishes, helping the booth blend into any interior, while its clean, simple form keeps the aesthetic uncluttered and contemporary.

It’s an innovative way to introduce privacy and versatility into the office without building walls. To learn more about the ØRN Converse Station, or other innovative workspace ideas, please get in touch!

A look back at one of our projects previous projects...

Brittany Ferries invited us to transform two floors of their Portsmouth Brittany Centre, creating spaces that balanced client hospitality with team wellbeing.

We delivered a full refurbishment across the ground and 3rd floors, including:

🔹 A modern boardroom and client visitor suite
🔹 New kitchens, breakout rooms, toilets, and locker facilities
🔹 Stylish partitioning, acoustic improvements, lighting, and decoration
🔹 Custom furniture and detailed 3D visuals to bring the vision to life.

Great office furniture doesn’t date, it adapts, evolves, and continues to earn its place in the modern workplace. We’ve always believed that truly considered design stands the test of time, and the Trilipse chair from manufacturing partner, Senator is a perfect example of this.

Originally developed in the early 2000s, Trilipse was created to rethink what a metal‑framed chair could be. The designers set out to move beyond the familiar round and square tube profiles that dominated the market at the time. The result was a distinctive triangular steel tube that gave the chair a new industrial, purposeful and contemporary feel.

Two decades on, that original idea hasn’t aged. Instead, it has continued to evolve, proving that when a design is right at its core, it remains relevant no matter how the workplace changes.

Whether fitting out a new building, an open plan floor space, or refurbishing/refreshing your existing workplace, our people centred approach is always the same.

The key to getting it right is to engage with management and staff to understand the company needs and culture, ensuring the design creates an inspiring and motivating environment for all.

When creating our design, we propose colour schemes that not only reflect the company’s brand, internally and externally, but will also promote good health, internal engagement, inspire creativity and encourage well-being.

We will produce 2D space plans to ensure that what we propose will fit! We will then produce mood boards with finishes and fabrics and also 3D rendered visual images to demonstrate how the finished interior will look.
