Here's a commission that I finished recently.

It was in a sorry state when it came to me with little sign of a finish on the pine, splits to the top and water stains all over.

I filled, sanded and refinished using a water based, natural finish which gives the pine a lovely subtle sheen.

It's always a little scary using clamps when there is glass or a mirror involved! Luckily I got away with it, without any cracks or smashes!

I've been busy recently, working on more retail plinths. They'll be going in to a new art gallery in Tewkesbury called Abbey Galleries. (a 'sister' to 'The Gallery' in Pershore) It's opening in early October.

Here's a link to the gallery page....

https://www.facebook.com/share/9S9eqyYV4NjxJANH/

I've made these before and these are a similar repeat order from a loyal customer! (see photo)

There are twelve plinths, made from 18mm thick MDF, biscuit jointed and painted using Valspar Premium Satin White paint with adjustable feet.

Although they look simple, they are very time consuming to make and finish. (paint applied with a small roller). They are also very heavy, so have worked a few muscles! Not to mention the jenga of shuffling them around in my new workshop!

Glad to see them dispatched last week!

I feel this is worth sharing...something I see a lot of...

A CONVERSATION ABOUT PERCEIVED VALUE:

A customer asked a contractor how much it would cost to do this project.

The contractor gave him a quote: £4500

The customer responded: That’s seems really high.

The contractor asked: What do you think is a reasonable price for this job?

The customer answered: £2500 maximum

The contractor responded: Ok, then I invite you to do it yourself.

The customer answered: I don't know how to.

The contractor said: Alright, then how about for £2500 I'll teach you how to. So besides saving you £2000, you'll learn valuable skills that will benefit you in the future.

The customer answered: Sounds good! Let’s do it!

The contractor responded: Great! To get started, you are going to need some tools. You will need a chop saw, table saw, cordless drill, bit set, router, skill saw, jig saw, tool belt, hammer, etc..

The customer answered: But I don't have any of those tools and I can't justify buying all of these for one job.

The contractor responded: Ok. Well then for an additional £300 I can rent my tools to you to use for this project.

The customer answered: Okay. That’s fair.

The contractor responded: Great! We will start the project on Monday.

The customer answered: I work Monday through Friday. I’m only available on the weekends.

The contractor responded: If you want to learn from me then you will need to work when I work. This project will take 3 days so you will need to take 3 days off work.

The customer answered: That means I’m going to have to sacrifice my pay for 3 days or use my vacation time!

The contractor responded: That’s true. Remember, when you do a job yourself you need to account for unproductive factors.

The customer answered: What do you mean by that?

The contractor responded: Doing a job completely from start to finish includes time spent to plan the project, pick up materials, travel time, gas, set up time, clean up, and waste disposal amongst other things. That’s all in addition to the actual project itself. And speaking of materials, that’s where we will start on Monday so I need you to meet me at the lumberyard at 6:00am.

The customer answered: At 6am?!! My work day doesn’t usually start until 8am!

The contractor responded: Well then you’re in luck! My plan is to start on the deck build by 8am. But to do so we have to start at 6am to get materials picked up, loaded and delivered to your job site.

The customer answered: You know, I’m realizing that a lot more goes in to a job than what a customer sees in the finished project. Your quote of £4500 is very reasonable. I would like you to handle the project.

CONCLUSION:

When you pay for a job, especially a custom job, (whether it’s a physical project or digital project) you pay not only for the material and the work to be completed. You also pay for:

✔️ Knowledge
✔️ Experience
✔️ Custom Skills
✔️ Tools
✔️ Time to plan
✔️ Time to prepare
✔️ Professionalism
✔️ Work Ethic
✔️ Excellence
✔️ Discipline
✔️ Commitment
✔️ Integrity
✔️ Taxes
✔️ Licenses
✔️ Sacrifices
✔️ Liabilities
✔️ Insurance

If you request a quote for custom work to be done, please don’t disrespect a service provider by trying to get them to lower their prices.

If their quote exceeds your budget, there’s nothing wrong with getting other quotes.

Just remember.. you get what you pay for.

👉🏼 SERVICE PROVIDERS: Know your worth and be confident in it.

Something for home this week!

As we are hosting the Christmas festivities this year, we needed a bigger table! There'll be eight on Christmas Day, so my task was to build a table extension!

Being an upcycling kind of woodworker, I bought myself a £30 Oak table on Facebook Marketplace which was in need of a little tlc and set about cutting it down to fit!

Here's the science!.....

The width became the added length and the cut down length became the new, correct width! Confusing!

As we all know, nothing is simple, so....

I needed to shorten the legs, cut the top to size, cut the sides of the frame, cut new grooves for the corners, trim off all of the overhangs to make it look more like our table, sand and refinish using Fiddes, hard wax oil and finally, reassemble everything, giving it a final polish.

It's going to get covered in a Christmassy table cloth, so why did I bother, you might ask yourself! Simple answer...... because that's what I do!

Done and Dusted.....and Delivered!

Three benches, one local Pershore customer!

Built using salvaged steel frames and reclaimed Ash and Beech from two local secondary schools.

Bespoke built to fit the spaces in their cloakroom area, I refinished the timber, added a second layer for shoe storage and swapped the original blue hooks for genuine, vintage black hooks on the large unit. The smaller benches also had a refresh, with refinished wood, powder-coated yellow frames and new Beech seat.

I have more of the yellow frames if you'd like a bespoke bench!

Any length to suit your space!

Just get in touch!

More work in progress...

This week I've been completing two more benches to add to the large cloakroom coat stand for my Pershore clients.

The benches are being refurbished/upcycled from ones salvaged from school PE changing rooms in Malvern and Evesham.

The first has had a refinish of its Ash wood, which was covered in 70s 'orange' gloss varnish.

The second bench I've made using zingy yellow frames which originated from The Chase School in Malvern, combined with lovely Beech, reclaimed from The DeMontfort School in Evesham!

I had the frames powder coated yellow from their original black to give them a fresh new look and have many more, should you like a bench made for your hallway, boot room or even your garden!

If you do....

Work in progress...

Finally getting into the swing of working from home! It's difficult, when there are so many domestic jobs on the to-do list staring at me every day!

I'm working on a cloakroom/hallway unit made from salvaged/reclaimed school frames, timber and hooks for local clients.

I will also be making two small benches to fit in the same space. Keep your eyes peeled for details...

Here's the first project to emerge from my new 'garden workshop'!

This beautiful Mahogany table came from a local Pershore opticians which I cleared about 5 years ago!

I had lots of lovely treasures from there including lots of vintage drawer units.

This table was probably used to display spectacles, although one of the glass inserts has opaque glass oddly!

I've refinished some of the mahogany and replaced the dirty, well worn, cream coloured velvet with purple velvet.

It's destined for a new bookshop/coffee shop in Worcester called Script Haven, run by a former colleague at The Chase School. Check out their page.... Script Haven

Do you like it's new incarnation?

A community hub with a café for authors and artists is set to open in Worcester next month.
