Refurbs. Well someone’s got to do ‘em…only joking! Taking out drenched, rotten old timber and crusty ancient putty is hardly the stuff of dreams. However bringing a spongy, rattly sleep disturber back to life is certainly satisfying and an important part of preserving our historic legacy.

This 14 metre veranda in Falmouth was no mean feat. Having removed and cleaned the existing 1960’s glass to be re used we then built a mock up of the replacement hip that had to match the acute angled cast iron columns. After a LOT of time spent getting the angles right it was off to the sprayer before fitting.
Constant monitoring of the distance between the off plumb house and front datum lines lead to some tight tolerances.
But after some blistering heat and summer downpours, one slip off a ladder for the boss and some beautiful lead work courtesy of Steve Uphill we completed a piece that will lend beauty and longevity to a gorgeous property for decades to come.

Heritage slimline double glazed window for a client in Cambridge. Glazing bars to match the thickness of the originals with angled bead to match victorian putty lines. Beautiful brushed brass ironmongery really sets it off for a classic finish.

A few years ago I made this exploded version of a window bar to help my apprentice at the time figure out how they go together. It’s not exactly correct as the quirks don’t line up but gives you a good idea of how the joint works! There’s multiple ways that glazing bars can be made but I find this way the best. I suppose it would be a moulded, lapped, mitred saddle joint? Creates a very strong, solid joint for glazing bar junctions.

The evenings are getting lighter and soon it’ll be time for beach fires, bbq’s, evening surfs after work and a little heat seeping back into our bones.

Joinery in the alps is just gorgeous. Letting nature and time have it’s way with handmade functional work turns the whole place into a living breathing artwork.

Been a while Instagram! We’ve been very busy. So here’s the beginning of a catch up on work. Throwback to the beautiful bay windows at Praze an Beeble. Check the light on a sunny autumn afternoon….

For this under stairs media unit we were given free reign to create something wonderful. Thankfully clients don’t come much better than Vicki from and when we came back with an oak veneered birch ply carcass clad in beautiful ash battens she was delighted. The following weeks involved hundreds of plugs, lots of oiling, scribing the carcass to extremely wonky walls and making sure the ash battens stayed perfectly in line. The result was an absolute cracker! Proud of this one. Hope you like it.

Really happy with how this refurbishment is going. When I first looked at these box sash windows on a listed heritage property I could push my finger through the bottom rails and the boxes were a crumbling rotten mess. We remade the boxes that were a long way past repair but managed to do a complete refurb on the sashes. What I had initially thought was un salvageable has turned out really well. Fresh lick of paint and some new brass brighton sash locks and they look as good as new!

Another lockdown won’t get us down, especially when we’re lucky enough to have these amazing beaches at our doorstep for our daily exercises.

Here at Alta we will be operating as usual, however we are unfortunately experiencing some delays from suppliers due to Covid and Brexit, but we can assure you we will still be working hard to produce everything to our usual high standards. 🪵
