Important Update Regarding Your Loan/Hire Purchase Account

Further to our previous update informing you that Walter Cox Ltd has closed and Northpoint have been appointed as Liquidators, we are writing to confirm that, as of 28 February 2026, your remaining balance has been written off, in full, for all accounts you hold with us.

What does this mean for you?

We stopped accepting payments from 28 February 2026. Our bank account has now been closed. As a result, any payments received will be automatically returned to you. However, if you have any standing orders in place, you may wish to contact your bank to ensure these are cancelled.

Be alert to scams

All customers should remain alert to the possibility of fraud. If anyone contacts you claiming to represent Walter Cox Ltd or requesting payment, do not pay them. Please report this to us immediately at [email protected] and to the Illegal Money Lending Team (24-Hour Helpline: 0300 555 2222 or www.stoploansharks.co.uk using the Live Chat available 9am-5pm, Mon-Fri).

Will my Account be sold on to another company?

No. Your Account will not be transferred or sold to any other company. You will not be contacted by another firm seeking to collect payments for this Account.

Where should you go if you need another loan?

If you’re looking for an alternative firm to provide a loan, you should only deal with firms authorised by the FCA. If you’re unsure whether a firm is authorised, check the Financial Services Register.

After 107 years in business Walter Cox Ltd has closed it’s doors for the last time.

We would like to thank all our loyal customers for your understanding and support during this difficult and emotional time. It is heart breaking that we can no longer serve the people of Walker, Byker, Wallsend and the surrounding areas but due to increasing costs and legislation, along with the number of customers choosing not to pay, the business can no longer continue. There is very little help from the government, council, banks, utility companies and suppliers for small businesses which is partly why so many are being forced into the decision to close.

Everyone can fall on hard times which is why we have always tried to be understanding, flexible and approachable but we hope the people who chose their foreign holidays, weight loss injections, designer clothes and the best mobile phones over paying their accounts realise they have helped to contribute in taking away a lifeline for many local people. We are truly sorry that the service and support we have provided through the generations will be lost, we have given the business everything but hard work and dedication isn’t enough to pay the bills.

Thank you to all our previous staff, many of whom we still call friends, you helped make the shop such an important part of the local community. Huge apologies to Sharon who has lost her job after 42 years of dedicated service.

We have been overwhelmed by the cards, presents and well-wishes and have loved hearing your stories and memories of the shop and my family from years gone by, some have made us laugh, some have made us cry, but they have all proved what a special and unique business Walter Cox Ltd was.

All agreements are still in place so we would ask that payments continue as normal.
