A pair of late Victorian Hepplewhite style side chairs back home with a delighted client.

My clients knew little about the chairs other than that the husband's father had acquired them in the early 1970s and that one of the chairs had a company plaque underneath (see last photo). A little research dated the chairs to between 1890-1899, when the company Edwards & Roberts used the address on the plaque.

My clients chose Bryher in redcurrant from and a complimentary trim from

The chairs now sit either side of a side table in my client's hallway.

Many thanks to for guidance on the well shape & stitching.

A group of us are taking on this challenge to support one of our gang who was diagnosed with a brain tumour last year. She'll be the one running in the brain costume.
🧠
The charity has been a wonderful support for her and her family. And any amount you can donate would be very much appreciated. Link to my fundraising page in my links below and in stories.

Hadn't come across chairs with a piece of show wood over the fabric at the rear before, called a shoe. They were interesting to remove in a 'please don't crack' kind of way 😯

And yeah to a previous upholsterer using 1.7cm basic nails for the support layers 😩 Next job, lots of hole filling.

The long tale of a chair. Brought to me in 2024 this is a much loved chair that had been in the family for a long time. It sits in the heart of the home with views out into the garden, and is a favourite spot for a cuppa.

Once I started to strip however it was clear that a lot of work needed doing on the frame, and that some pieces would even need replacing. The client's husband is a cabinet maker and was happy to take on this work himself. Self employed life being what it is this piece was obviously not his top priority and it was a full year before I received the frame back good as new and ready for me to work on it.

I built the chair back up using rubberised horse hair on the back and arm pads, and fully traditional materials and techniques on the seat. The client chose a lovely soft boucle which I sourced from and we matched a double piping from

It is now back in my client's home and will continue to give the family a snuggly seat on which to pause, rest, drink a cuppa and watch the birds in the garden for many years.

It shows the business owner that you appreciate the work they have done, it helps with higher listings in online searches, and it gives prospective future clients an idea of what to expect.

Back on the bench

I stripped this chair October last year and discovered that the frame wood was extremely friable and in places broken. Luckily my client's husband is a cabinet maker so was happy to take on the repairs himself. Like all self employed people paid work takes priority over jobs for oneself and so this took longer than he originally anticipated.

Delivered back at the weekend it is repaired and ready for me to start work on it.

The beast is looking beautiful and is back home with happy clients.

My client remembers her grandparents having this chair, and, as a child, she used it to perform gymnastics on the cause of some loose springs. The chair was passed to her and her husband when they were first married 50 years ago, and it has spent most of those years with various loose covers on it.
πŸ”…
They chose a Morris design fabric in a weave, which works nicely with the chair. I learnt loads as always, and this chair gave me the chance to work on my first independent sprung edge.
