It is not uncommon for the folding tops of antique card tables to warp over time and not sit flat on the base anymore. This occurs when the groundwork (wood) the veneer is secured onto loses its shape (often due to drying out in modern houses) and it is impossible to press back into shape without the risk of splitting the wood and therefore the veneer as well.

The only remedy is to remove the baize from the inside surface of the top and then carefully remove the old warped groundwork to within a few millimetres of the top veneer. Once completed a new flat groundwork can be glued into place and the inside of the top re-bazed. The repair is hidden underneath the new baize and the result is a flat stable top, sittiing perfectly on base.

The table in the photos is a perfect example of how secessful this can be and we were lucky in that the baize needed to be replaced anyway, so had to be removed. This is a tricky procedure but well worth the time and effort to make the table usable again.

It is not uncommon for furniture to come into the workshop having been damaged in some way by water. This lovely marquetry jardiniere is one such example. Luckily we were able to remove the damage and re-polish the top, restoring the piece back to its former glory.

We were asked to restore this lovley jewellery box inlayed with mother of pearl. The inside was in a poor state of repair, with the inside having been previously been covered with bright yellow sticky back plastic. After consultation with the client, we settled on re-lining the interior with quality lining paper and the bright yellow silk was replaced with a rich gold. A lot of work went into recreating the interior, including making a new paper folder for the drop down section inside the lid. Having been in the client’s family for many years, this wonderful box can now be passed down to future generations. Special thanks to Mylyn McColl, Fiona Bailey and Andrea Marshall who all helped with the project.

We have just finished restoring this super quality Victorian travelling box. With coromandel veneer on the outside, inset with a mother of pearl escutcheon to the front and similar inset on the top. It has a lovely patina and shine. The inside has all its original jars along with a complete manicure set. Inside the lid is a removable panel with a mirror one side and velvet the other, behind this is a compartment for letters. A push button mechanism releases the single drawer, which has felt lined compartments, including one for a pocket watch. This was a pleasure to work on and a wonderful example of a Victorian travelling box.

We have recently completed the restoration of this lovely tunbridge ware box, with mother of pearl inlay. This box was in a poor state, missing most of its inlay on the outside and the original internal compartments were also missing. We painstakingly replaced the mother of pearl and other inlay and cleaned and polished the outer surface. Inside we made a new tray and re-fitted the interior to the client's requirements, including new velvet lining to the bottoms of all the compartments. A labour of love but a real transformation in the end!
