Anja Löbert Interior Design

Anja Löbert Interior Design Women's DIY and Refurb Coach, Handywoman, Interior Designer and Soap Maker based in Manchester. But don’t you let that put you off!

Hi, I'm Anja,

I’m a freelance wood and interior designer based in Manchester. My working interests are broad and ever-evolving, including woodwork, furniture design and improvisation from reclaimed materials as well as designing and re-imagining interior spaces. I spent the first part of my professional life favouring the analytical side of my brain and personality. With a degree in Sociology, Me

dia Studies and English from Germany, I reported on British and American culture and society as a freelance journalist for German news outlets such as Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Der Tagesspiegel, Die Welt und ZEIT Online. I published numerous peer-reviewed academic articles and book chapters in the field of popular music and fandom studies, and helped other scholars disseminate their work in the English-speaking scientific world in good English. In 2016, triggered in part by the death of my lifelong inspiration David Bowie, I began working creatively with tangible materials like wood, paints, stains and pieces of seemingly unsalvageable furniture. I have since designed my first series of coat racks which combine expressionist and abstract painting with a useful, but often bland piece of homeware. I consider myself an expressionist craftswoman with a fine art sensibility. To continuously add to my “vocabulary”, skill set and repertoire, I am attending courses at the Leeds College of Art and Design, Manchester DIY School, and soon the National Design Academy. When I’m not working in wood or breathing new life into sad and unimaginative spaces, I like to take long countryside walks with my dog Dixon, immerse myself in the Manchester jazz, art and theatre scene or travel to explore what other cities and cultures have to offer.

🌿 Did you know I make vegan wellbeing products too? 🌿

Most of you know me for DIY classes, drills, tiles and power tools... but if you've ever been to one of my workshops, you've probably also noticed the beautiful essential oil scents in my studio.

Alongside DIY with Anja, I also handcraft a range of vegan wellbeing products under my Wild Owl Rituals brand, all made in small batches in little workshop studio space in Whalley Range.

✨ Vegan soaps
✨ Tiger balm
✨ Massage oils
✨ Massage waxes
✨ Hand sanitiser
✨ Mini retreat and self-care gift bags

Everything is vegan, handmade with care, and designed to bring a little calm, comfort and sensory pleasure to everyday life.

Many of you will already have smelled the lavender, lemongrass, spearmint, rosemary and other essential oils I use throughout the studio. Those same beautiful scents find their way into many of my products too.

If you'd like to have a browse, you can find the full range in my online shop

I'd love to know which product catches your eye. 💚

P.S. Yes, it's entirely possible to love power tools and massage oils. I certainly do. 😄

🌿 Have you done one of my DIY classes before? 🌿

As a little thank you, I'm offering all previous students 10% off my upcoming DIY for Gardeners workshop. That’s £54 instead of £60

This class is ideal if you've already done Basic Drill Skills (or have some experience using a drill) and would like to put those skills into practice outdoors.

We'll cover:
🔨 Putting up trellises
🪴 Hanging baskets and wall planters
🌿 Choosing the right outdoor fixings
🏺 Drilling into planters without breaking them

I've sent the discount code out in today's newsletter. If you're a past student and haven't seen the email, just drop me a message and I'll happily send you the code.

I'd love to see some familiar faces there! 😊

Offer ends this weekend.

With this gorgeous Manchester weather, it’s the perfect time to finally start those garden projects you've been thinking about ☀️

I'm excited to announce my new class starting in July. This is a perfect follow up for anyone who has done my basic drill skills class and would like to consolidate their drill skills with a focus on turning your garden into an oasis.

My new DIY for Gardeners workshop is for people who love their outdoor space but wish they felt more confident using drills, fixings and simple tools to actually create things themselves.

We’ll cover genuinely useful, real-life skills you can immediately use at home. In the class you will be:
🌿 putting up a trellis onto a brick wall using spacers, washers, weatherproof screws and the correct wall plugs
🪴 drilling drainage holes into pots and containers without cracking them — whether they are terracotta, metal or plastic
🪚 fixing hanging baskets safely onto brick walls
🔩 fixing a bird box onto a tree or wooden post
🌸 learning how to mount hose reels (theory only)

While this class is an ideal follow-up for students who have attended my Basic Drill Skills workshop and want to consolidate their confidence, it is also suitable for complete beginners.

Ideally you will bring your own combi drill so you can practise with the tool you use at home. I do also have a couple of spare drills available if needed.

No “silly questions”.
Just practical, hands-on skills in a relaxed small-group environment.

Perfect if you’ve ever thought:
“I could probably do this myself… if someone just showed me how.”

My spring Basic Drill Skills classes are now well underway. We started this week with 4 classes. There's more coming up, most of which are already fully booked. There are a couple of classes in June that still have tickets available.

Here's what you'll learn:

Basic Drill Skills for Women

In this hands-on DIY workshop for women, you will learn how to confidently use a drill for common household tasks like hanging shelves, curtain rails, blinds, and picture frames — plus plenty of practical skills you can apply to other DIY jobs.

In a relaxed and supportive setting, and in the company of three like-minded women, you’ll get familiar with tools, materials and wall types, so you can make informed choices and avoid common pitfalls.

The workshop will cover:

how to understand your combi drill and its different functions (drill / hammer / screwdriver)

how to drill safely and effectively into both masonry and hollow walls

which drill bits to use for different jobs — and how to know which one you need

which wall plugs and screws work best for different types of walls

how to recognise different screw heads and how to avoid stripping them
what to do if a hole you drilled is too big or has blown

Each participant will have the opportunity to practice her drill skills on a mock-up wall using a hammer drill, and there will be time for any DIY questions you may have.

The workshop will last about 2 hours and take place in Whalley Range.

You will receive a handout to take home, which you can continue to use as reference.

Do you need any PLASTERING done? I have teamed up with a friend of mine who is a professional plasterer and has been involved in many of my refurb projects since 2020. Drew is really nice, professional and his prices are extremely competitive.
If you need any plastering done, you can now contact me for a quote. We will quote remotely, wherever possible. So please DM me with photos or videos of the area(s) rooms that need plastering. Please include your location and when you would like this work done.
