Best thing I did was to ‘give’ Kojirō™️ to my Daughters and Son and take a back seat, they run everything far better than I ever had time for, leaving me free to do the work i enjoy, designing new scissors for Kojirō and working on customers own scissors.
Maddy especially, who runs everything day to day has come into her own in confidence, ability and professionalism, Georgia advises from a groomers practical perspective with lots of top level experience and blunt no nonsense approach, if it’s not good enough she says so and we carry on revisions until we get it right, Cory with his professionalism, knowledge and vast experience in digital marketing and corporate communication work incredibly well together and are a seriously formidable young but very experienced team. They all display on a daily basis my determination, work ethic, belief in honesty/integrity and also have my sheer bloody mindedness, blunt honesty and passion in spades, whilst bringing their own unique talents and qualities to the business. Kojirō™️ & K by Kojirō™️ are in exceptionally good hands ✂️❤️
Unlike the vast majority of other brands (except the very big names), we don’t order from a catalogue. We sit and discuss what we like, what we believe a groomer needs, what’s lacking, sometimes we look at what’s around and if/how we can significantly improve either popular designs ergonomically and structurally, or create a completely new unique design, from both a groomer and a technical perspective. I then either mock up a physical design or work on a very detailed specification, we send those off to reputable manufacturers to see if they can produce our specific unique design, in our exclusive specifications, exacting standards and with very specific non negotiable certified Japanese steel quality, in ‘blank’ form, so that I can complete final finishing, some CNC machining where necessary, sharpening and building.
Yes it’s complicated, yes, it’s time consuming and it was hellish expensive to set up, but we are creating individual, exclusive scissors of as high a quality as possible, that are still affordable, that can last an entire career.
Anyone who says they have the same scissor as a Kojirō (but it isn’t branded Kojirō/K by Kojirō) is quite simply lying to you. All our scissors are unique and exclusive to us, whether in the type of certified Japanese steel, edge and overall geometry, pivot mechanism and quality, handle length/shape, pivot machining and hand built, sharpened/finished by myself personally. Kojiros’s are professional tools created exclusively to make a highly skilled, arduous job that bit easier, enhancing your skills, whilst also being aesthetically pleasing and feel a joy to use.
However, it seems from some of the scissors I’m seeing sent in for sharpening recently, that we are doing almost the opposite of virtually everyone else? I see scissors that are obviously manufactured using the cheapest steel possible, (one recently when i researched the steel code stamped on it, was actually the identical steel used in rebar, to reinforce concrete in buildings 😩😳) and it’s like a race to the bottom, rather than chasing and endeavouring to supply better quality, that actually lasts. It’s almost like some brands are producing costume jewellery, it might look pretty, but wear or use it a few times and it’s only fit for throwing in a drawer.
Sparkly & Pretty seems to take precedence over durability and performance which I find very sad, especially given lots of newer groomers are not taught about scissors/scissor technique in training, so really have no understanding of what quality (as it refers to scissors) means or even what makes a good or bad scissor 🤷♂️
The simple fact is that genuine quality isn’t cheap, it never was and it never will be. Sadly there are a lot of scissors out there that are obviously poorly manufactured, from inferior quality materials and yet they are sold at prices comparable with Premium quality scissors 🤷♂️🤔
I see groomers online every single day recommending brands or design styles saying ‘best scissors ever……’ Really?? Really??? Are you kidding?? Exactly how many scissors have you bought/used in your 3/6/9 months grooming? 🥴
It’s incredibly frustrating when I sometimes see a groomer sending the same scissors in every 6 weeks because they bought a pretty/sparkly scissor made from ‘2nd hand tin foil’ as a hard working daily scissor 😩
Go speak to experienced groomers, the ‘old hands in the industry’ who’ve use dozens and hundreds of scissor brands and types in their career, or a reputable professional sharpener, see what they use and respect, it will pay dividends.
Kojirō™️ are currently looking for Brand Ambassadors, although I don’t get involved in day to day issues, I have stated categorically that ALL Kojirō Ambassadors MUST be experienced, respected professionals, people who understand scissors and what makes genuine quality. They MUST be groomers giving a considered opinion from a position of actual knowledge, people who’s opinion demands respect, successful competition groomers in some cases but not always, but absolutely not just anyone who wants to sign up, parrot sales lines or throw out discount codes like confetti, when they wouldn’t know a good/bad scissor if they cut themselves with it 😳✂️🫣
