It’s very rare that I want to paint chairs, but these two have seen better days and the dark blue of Sgurr Alasdair from shows off the frame beautifully

Now I’m building the seat using a paper tackroll, tarpaulin hessian and recycled horse hair.

I’ve repaired the frames and filled the caning holes. I’ve also added an extra webbing strap to the underside to stabilise the frame- it’s not the strongest! Ready to finish the wood now!

Another lovely student review- thank you Hester 😘

Sometimes it’s nice to do something for yourself. I have two of these cute chairs which were once caned.

They were donated to me and have sat untouched for several years, now they’re destined for my spare room.

I’m going to be a little creative and “hook” the covers for them. Watch this space!

But first the frames need mending and filling. Have been wondering whether to paint them or wax. I’m tempted to use Scurr Alasdair from the Isle of Skye Paint Company- but I’m not sure 🤔

Yesterday’s session was a busy one- both students have a set of dining chairs to reupholster so there was lots of stripping, filling and webbing happening. Lots of progress made 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
It’s a nice warm up before we all trundle off the Kettle Bells with Jane Mackay Martin

Autumn is here!
We’ve had a lovely bright week, making the most of the dry weather getting another mow in and removing some dead trees.

We’re away from the workshop for the weekend with family- looking forward to some beautiful walks in the Welsh wind and rain!

Nice to have some downtime after a bit of a stressful week- selling houses isn’t easy - who knew?!

Exciting News!! On the 27th May we (Pip, Roah and myself) will be moving home and workshop to the Isle of Skye 😀

We are moving to Isleornsay on the beautiful Sleat Peninsula where there are some delightful places to stay. We will be running leisure upholstery, sewing and craft courses during the summer months and day upholstery sessions during the winter.

I can’t express how hard it will be to leave Sylva and all my friends in Oxfordshire- the past 10 years have been the happiest of my life, and I’m really proud of what Mary’s Chairs has grown into over the last 9 years.

I am so excited to start this new adventure, and to be able to join the fabulous creative community on Skye 😊🥂🏔️
