The ‘Birka’ Art Deco Desk — Axel Einar Hjorth, c.1935

An exceptional Swedish Art Deco desk designed by Axel Einar Hjorth for Nordiska Kompaniet (NK), circa 1935.

Crafted in richly figured sapele, the ‘Birka’ desk is distinguished by its beautifully curved reverse, fitted with open bookshelves — a remarkable design that is as impressive from the back as it is from the front.

Hjorth was one of Sweden’s leading furniture designers of the period and headed Nordiska Kompaniet’s furniture and design department from 1926 to 1938.
