Based Upon based upon is a London studio of artists and designers making large scale art and sculptural furniture and working on bespoke projects for luxury interiors

Based Upon is an artist. Guided by twin brothers Ian and Richard Abell, Based Upon travels the world to gather narratives, memories, textures and histories. In the London studio, these grow into sculptural works which look at notions of oneness and separation, the natural and the manmade. These works tell stories: of a client’s life, or of Based Upon’s own experiences. Each Based Upon work carries

the intention of its maker; every piece resonating with the personal or physical landscapes from which it was conceived.

Might peacefulness be the most precious commodity of them all? ‘We Are Here’ is a bespoke work for a Beverly Hills home, a sanctuary within the city. Using the Irish island of Inis Oirr as the basis, the piece uses scan data of the island’s topography, while an integrated lighting system complements a natural skylight above the work and gives the impression that it is breathing.

Our travels take us to many extraordinary places. On exploring the Hawaiian island of O’ahu we were profoundly moved by the beauty of the landscape. Taking casts as we went, our mission was to preserve the essence of O’ahu’s scenery, recreating the vivid blues of the ocean’s surface, and the sky in its ever-changing state. A sculpture series that invites a different view of a dynamic world - we sought to find a visual expression for the concept of rest within a brand associated with physical activity and dynamic human movement.
