To celebrate London Craft Week Soane’s founder Lulu Lytle will be in conversation with Fiona McCarthy on Tuesday 9th May at The V&A Museum as they discuss the way Soane is working with craftspeople around the UK to preserve traditional making skills and to champion new ones. In 2011 Soane initiated its own apprenticeship schemes to foster the very specific skills required to make rattan furniture and lighting, which include steam bending and weaving cane. We are lucky to have three generations of one family working together in the Soane workshop, pictured below.

Chair making is a highly specialised craft requiring exceptional joinery skills to make chairs of great quality and comfort. Soane Britain has taken ownership of one of a very few workshops in Britain still making chairs exclusively by hand in Dorset and continuing the traditions of eighteenth century master chair makers. The frames for Soane’s large collection of chair, sofa and stool designs are hand-made to order using carefully chosen materials.

Soane’s traditionally upholstered chairs, sofas and stools are made by specialists in Somerset employing diverse materials to meet the demands of each design. Frames are delivered from the chair makers ready to be hand-sprung, hand-stitched and webbed, using feather and down cushions.

Inspired by Ottoman turbans, The Rattan Pasha Hanging Light is hand-woven on a cane frame by Soane’s Leicestershire rattan weavers. The undulating design curves upwards and inwards, leaving the centre and top open. The light is available in small or large, suspended by natural rope or chain.

Our Story

Soane Britain designs and makes outstanding furniture, rattan, lighting, wallpaper, fabrics and necessities, all entirely produced in the UK. Soane is proud to have secured the future of British-made rattan by the acquisition in 2011 of the last surviving rattan weaving workshop in Britain.

Co-founder Lulu Lytle started with a road-trip around Britain to find craftsmen practising traditional skills; blacksmiths, cabinet-makers, saddlers, upholsterers and stone carvers with whom she could work. Over two decades, Soane has cultivated close working relationships with a network of talented craftsmen across the country as well as investing in its own workshops and apprenticeship schemes.
