Have you listened to our episode of with yet?🎙️

Today’s post looks at visual explorations by Morag Myerscough, photographed in her studio on Drysdale Studio, Hoxton, as part of a brand development project for Coexistence in 2009.

Morag said “we were looking at developing the branding through a new series of photos, and I remember I wanted the images to feature people.

I loved doing this project, drawing inspiration from references from the 1960s.”

When design meets art.

This was a Coexistence project for Deutsche Bank in London, back in 2000.

The reception space was kept minimalistic but used iconic pieces to make a statement.
The Barcelona chairs by Knoll sat alongside artwork by Damien Hirst, and a powerful sculpture by Anish Kapoor called ‘Turning the World Inside Out’.

Today is our 50th Anniversary!

In contemplating this significant milestone, our co-founders share their thoughts. Mary said:

‘50 years ago it seemed like a good idea to open a shop to promote good design and craftsmanship!

A lot has changed over the years in the way we do this, but this design ethic is something that is key to all we have done and are still maintaining!’

Similarly, Ross said:

‘Coexistence was established as we wanted to encourage British product design, particularly furniture and lighting. Having succeeded in meeting this objective, we see Coexistence today as helping to raise the UK’s design bar even higher.’

Thank you to all our past and current team, suppliers, clients, and friends for your support and help along the way.

Thanks Working closely with the designer on this commercial office project, Coexistence helped develop a scheme that referenced the client’s original offices to create a cohesive design language, whilst incorporating a wide range of furniture, adding character and depth.

The 6th floor is a formal office but with a more relaxed style for entertaining. A combination of bespoke, lounge and office furniture, accessories and lighting were selected, to create an interior evocative of warmer climates. The result is a calm and engaging multi-purpose space.

Ross Bull, Coexistence’s co-founder, has always led a double life. He has worked globally in developing/post-conflict countries; as well as being co-founder of Coexistence.

Although Mary had a background in design (her grandfather founded J&J Wiggin, which became Old Hall, and she worked for the Design Council, Heal’s, and the General Trading Company prior to setting up Coexistence), Ross’s story is incredibly different. He studied mathematical economics & statistics at Bristol, and worked in the UK’s Ministry of Energy prior to meeting Mary and setting up Coexistence.

Through Mary, Ross became aware of Casa Vogue, a monthly magazine that showcased emerging Italian furniture, lighting designs, and architecture. She also took him to a major exhibition of Italian furniture and lighting held at Harrods in 1970-71 that opened his eyes to the world of contemporary product design. When asked about this, Ross said “I wondered why the UK did not at that time have access to such products and what Mary and I could do to improve the situation”.

Ross is still involved behind the scenes as a consultant for Coexistence, and is about to go to Kyiv helping to support Ukraine’s smallholder farmers.

These two deep interests had to coexist in Ross’s career, and reflecting back, Ross said ”if I had not worked abroad, I would not have been exposed to different ideas and international management standards which I was able to use subsequently to help develop Coexistence”.

Most of you will associate Mary with Coexistence, but you might not know the story behind it. At the time of developing the name, Mary’s co-founder, Ross, was teaching algebra at the University of Birmingham. Inspired by the word “cofactor” (a term used in algebra), they looked at words that stemmed from this, and eventually Mary and Ross landed on Coexistence. They liked the name and the fact that one of their main themes/ideas was that “you can put old & new furniture together if you get the mix right”.

Once the name was agreed, the shop opened in Bath. This was the perfect location to showcase the connection between contemporary design and antiques with Bath being a Georgian city.

The idea initially was to sell contemporary design (furniture, lighting, accessories) alongside antiques, but it became clear that the name Coexistence could justify adding other products to the range to enhance the personal living space, such as textiles, clothes (by Margaret Howell and others), and perfumes (by Penhaligon’s) which were subsequently added to the product range 12-14 months after Coexistence had established itself in Bath.
