🧱 Why Bricklayers Should Be Earning £1 a Brick in 2025
For decades, bricklayers have been the backbone of the construction industry. Every home, school, hospital, and office building you see started with a bricklayer on site — yet the pay has barely moved in years.
Right now, many bricklayers are still working for as little as 65p a brick. That might sound like it adds up, but when you factor in all the extras — installing lintels, trays, fire barriers, jointing both sides of a block, and countless other “included” jobs — that rate starts looking a lot more like exploitation than fair pay.
Here’s the truth:
Costs have gone up — tools, fuel, PPE, and living expenses are all far higher than they were a few years ago.
Skill levels are at an all-time high — today’s bricklayers are expected to work faster, safer, and to higher standards than ever before.
We build the nation — without bricklayers, construction stops. Simple as that.
If rates had risen fairly with inflation and industry demands, the going rate today would already be £1 a brick. That’s before even talking about extra pay for additional work.
It’s time the industry caught up. £1 a brick isn’t greed — it’s fair pay for skilled work that keeps the country standing.
Bricklayers aren’t asking for handouts. We’re asking for respect, fair rates, and an end to the “all-in” pricing that’s been draining the trade for years.
The message is simple: Pay bricklayers what they’re worth — £1 a brick, plus proper rates for extras.
