But first we need to strip back the old finish

I used a varnish stripper to remove the old dark finish before giving this vintage table a good clean.

I wanted a lighter, farmhouse finish that would still protect the wood from every day use

I decided a tinted wax to add a little depth and character that also let the beautiful grain shine through.

Let me know what you think of the new look

Let’s Paint it Black…

I stripped back the old orange toned wax to uncover the most beautiful wood grain.

I wanted to do something a bit different to the lighter farmhouse finish so I decided on a black wash.

I sprayed the wood down and painted it with a black wash before wiping the excess back.
I then top coated it for a longer lasting finish.

Can You Believe this Vintage Cocktail Cabinet was Only £25?!

I started by stripping back the old, worn varnish

Unfortunately only the doors and top had this beautiful veneer so I decided on a little black paint to frame the stunning grain and let it take centre stage.

I then refinished the exposed wood to give a rich tone.

What do you think of the new look?

This £20 Mid Century Dresser was long overdue a makeover.

I stripped back the old varnish before adding a rich British racing green to the sides and trim.

A added a touch of gold to the door fronts before varnishing the exposed wood

The perfect combination of mid century and modern

Now Let’s Get it Summer Ready…

The old paint was quite literally peeling off this solid wood bench.
So with a little help from the jet washer, I was able to get it completely free of its old finish.

I decided a primer and treatment to prevent rot and insect damage was well worth it before I added some much needed colour.

Now I just need the sun to make an appearance

Let’s lighten this old blanket box…..

I love vintage furniture but the dark finish doesn’t suit our home and most of the dark pieces I pick up are worn and patchy

I gave this blanket box a thorough clean before sanding back the old varnish.

I don’t often do a paint wash, but I decided to test it out on this piece for a fresh modern look before sealing it to protect the finish.

I’d love to know what you think of the new farmhouse finish

I loved these drawers, but they needed a little makeover

I stripped back the old chalk paint and found beautiful wood beneath

I really wanted to keep the grain exposed and warm but without adding any orange tones.

I decided on a neutral tinted wax to keep the wood warm and the grain visible.

And this is why I love upcycling. Just because a piece has been refinished, that doesn’t mean that’s how it got to stay forever.

Ad | I made a mistake picking this dresser up

I hated it as soon as I got it home, I even tried giving it away but had no takers so decided on an extreme makeover.

I stripped it all back, removing the trim and table top before replacing the legs

Then I took a huge leap out of my comfort zone and opened a tin of Painting the Past “open the wine” and got to painting

I replaced the old top with an oversized stripped pine dining table top and gave it glazed finished using afternoon nap

Thankfully it all came together to create a bespoke bold, farmhouse kitchen island.

These vintage bedroom drawers were ind desperate need of some love

The dark finish was flaking off and in patches all over

I started with a good clean to remove and grease and grime and to check over the piece before I sanded back the old flaky finish.

The wood underneath was in great condition.

I didn’t want to hide the grain again under a dark dated finish, so decided on a soft wax to allow the grain the peak through. I then top coated it all for a super long lasting finish.

What do you think of this new farmhouse look?

I LOVE a Freebie!

If want to give upcycling a go but have been worried about jumping in, a free project is a great place to start!

It’s great to find a pieces to try out some different finishes and techniques without the worry of ruining a family heirloom

This gorgeous little, vintage side table was free and perfect for a mini makeover

I stripped back the old varnish before refinishing the wood

I then added a gold boarder to the table top to help frame the grain and really make it take centre stage.

A very simple makeover for a beautiful little table.

Are you a jump in at the deep end or a test the waters first person?

It was is really good condition for its age, with only some worn varnish.

I decided to strip the old finish before adding a touch of gold to the curved detailing.

I used delicate FrogTape UK, carefully creating the shape with small pieces to ensure the paint blocking tech was still in tact for the shape.

I then sealed the edges of the with a little water before adding the gold.

Then came the peel.

I refinished the wood and paint with a hardwearing floor varnish for a long lasting finish that highlights the beauty in the wood.
