We were privileged to be asked to undertake the reupholstery of these dining chairs and stools.

The chairs were of great importance to our customer as they were hand-made and upholstered by her father-in-law over a period of several years in the 1970's.

Although the chairs look identical there were subtle differences in each one due the bespoke nature of their manufacture.

The upholstery work was carried out a couple of chairs at a time so that our customer always had something to sit on.

The work itself was very much a team effort with apprentice and upholsterer working together to produce the finished result.

Scratch resistant leather supplied to us by Wildman & Bugby.

A satisfying job that was enjoyable to do.

Thanks for looking 😊

This pair of sofas were completely reupholstered from the frame up . As there was some doubt as to the fire safety aspect of the original upholstery, all the original covers and foams were removed in order to make way for compliant fabrics and fillings.

The fabric was from Leckford Weaves range by with the cord being supplied by our customer.....a lovely combination.

Now back sitting proudly in their fishing lodge home on the banks of the famous River Spey.

Sofas like this deserve a bit of 'pampering' so one of the photos has been edited to show off the finished result in a more luxurious setting than our untidy workshop....can you guess which photo ? 🤣

Thanks for looking 🙂

Who remembers the fable about the ugly duckling ?

For those of you who are familiar with this tale you will know that the moral of the story is 'Don't judge a book by its cover'

Before buzzwords like 'upcycling or 'side hustle' were a thing, this young upholsterer had great plans to find beaten up old chairs, do them up and sell them for a profit. Sadly like many of my ideas this never really materialised, and as the years progressed, I became so busy working on customers furniture, there was little or no time for any side projects.

Anyway, I think its fair to say this Facebook Marketplace find could be described as an ugly duckling. I am guessing its age but I reckon if it was human it could be claiming its state pension !

Our aim with this chair is to show how this tatty piece of furniture can be transformed into a thing of beauty that anyone would be proud to own.

So, if you are interested follow along and watch step by step as this project progresses....audience participation will be welcomed .

Due to the label on the original upholstery this can only be known as "The Peter Pan Project" 🙂

And by the way, unless anyone wants to buy this chair this will very much be a 'spare time' project......just putting this out there 😂

This corner dining bench has been given a complete revamp here in our Lhanbryde workshop.

To begin with the old covering was removed. Extra foam was then added to improve the comfort levels. The original faux leather has been replaced with this smart Aquaclean Hythe fabric in the Granite colourway from . We say this every time but these Aquaclean fabrics really are outstanding in terms of value for money, durability and the fact that most household spills can be cleaned with just water...an ideal choice for busy households.

Another project completed.

Thanks for taking the time to have a look 🙂

Kitchen Dining bench recently upholstered in Aquaclean Scala fabric from ....most household spills cleanable with just water.

The seat was also heightened and firmed up by adding a good quality high resilience foam which meant our customers could sit more comfortably at their table.

Thanks for looking.

Just to be clear, this text conversation was generated by me...but we do occasionally have similar conversations with some of our customers.

Part of the trade off staying in a nice part of the country like Morayshire with its IV postcode, is that we sometimes have to pay inflated carriage charges.

This is why wherever possible we try to make the most of every delivery by making up a 'decent order' which spreads the carriage cost over a few jobs.

This may mean delaying placing your order. This is normally not an issue as we are probably not ready to start the work anyway.

Plus, we do not ask for any fabric deposits to be paid until we know your fabric is on its way to us.

There are of course times when we need our fabrics urgently. In these circumstances we are happy to order right away and delivery is normally 2-3 days.

Carriage charges vary greatly, and to be honest £36 is at the higher end of the scale, but on average a cost of £ 15 - 20 per is the norm.

Just trying to explain the reasons behind the way we operate. Look after the pennies and all that 👍🙂

ESTABLISHED 6/4/1998....28 YEARS IN THE BAG

28 years ago to the day was the first official day of business for Raymond Mackenzie Upholstery. If memory serves me right, week beginning 6th of April 1998 was similar to right now, with cold spring days and flurries of sleet and snow. The country was also beginning to get excited for the upcoming World Cup in France where Scotland would take part in the opening game against Brazil....who would have thought it would take another 28 years for us to reach that tournament again.

I remember those first few months well...the news stories of the time, the songs in the charts, the enthusiasm, the thrill of starting a business and of course the novelty of being my own boss...something which I hope I have never abused or taken for granted.

But, here we are 28 years on, enthusiasm still intact, job satisfaction box ticked, and a love of doing upholstery work which has never diminished. There is no doubt that the 'being my own boss' bit has became measurably more difficult, and a steady flow of work has at times manifested itself into a Tsunami which can completely overwhelm at times.

Would I have it any other way ? The answer is probably not !

Would I change anything ? Again the answer is probably not !

During these 28 years our main priority has been to do the best job that we can. Above all else we like to think that this is one of the reasons that we have always been able to answer the most common question we get asked in a positive manner. 'Are you keeping busy ?' I am pleased to say that without exception, the answer has always been a resounding 'Yes, its very busy thanks'

There are also many factors outwith our control which have meant that demand has increased and our time is under more pressure than ever before. I think there does come a time that despite doing our very best, I have to accept that we are a small business with a limited capacity and that we just cannot keep everyone happy at the same time.

The truth is that being somewhat established by now, we are in a very fortunate position of having work come to us on a regular basis. Whilst this is great for us in terms of job security, it is clearly not so good for our customers who are having to wait patiently on the job list for us to get round to helping them. We are taking steps to improve this, but it takes time, patience and a lot of hard work to improve systems and increase working capacity.

One thing that is clear to me is that as a business owner and upholsterer I need to ensure that I protect my time in the workshop much better to improve productivity. I am in no doubt that for too long I have allowed myself to be dictated to as to what I work on and when I work on it. When doing your best is no longer good enough then things most definitely have to change.

Please dont misunderstand, despite the current challenges, I feel we are in the best position as a business we have been in for a long time. We have been catching up or are in the process of catching up on some long term outstanding jobs. We have made big efforts to make our physical workshop a bit tidier and more efficient. It is small space so it will never be perfect ...but it is better than it has been for many years. We have systems in place as regards accounting, job management and appointment scheduling software... we just have to make sure we use them to their full advantage.

There will be some minor changes to come in the way that we do things, if our business is of interest to you then please keep an eye on our website (particularly the 'latest news' page) as well as our Facebook, Instagram and TikTok which we have been trying to update on a regular basis.

I doubt we will do this for another 28 years but who knows , even Mrs Raymond Mackenzie Upholstery may get me to do some of the jobs she asked for if I 'Protect my time' a bit better !

Thanks for taking the time to read this !

All the Best

Raymond
