Who doesn’t love a label. This one is on the sprung unit in the seat of the Halabala style chair. Had to strip it out to replace the webbing. Original pads going back on as they are fine.

In for new togs this 1950s halabala style chair. It’s a refreshing treat to strip back. So much so we wanted to share some of the pics. All original and not a staple in sight. Going to be covered in one of the lovely wools from their Vibrance. Collection. Little bit of remedial work, new webs under the sprung unit and some finishing work on the topside of the arms and feet which are water damaged and worn.

Giant rush chair or tiny armchair 🤔 🤣. How fabulous is this miniature rush chair. Finished today by Alison in our afternoon class. It had seen better days when Alison bought it, broken stretcher and tired frame. Roll forward and it’s now ready for service again.

A day of variety in our upholstery classes today . Anna’s lovely chair in the manner of Bruce J Talbert got its first coats of black finish. Using Lamp Black pigment, a lovely deep black. Will need to be knocked back a little (bit glossy at the mo) and then some gilding to pick out the incised carved details. Before cracking on with the rest of the upholstery. Julie getting stuck in for her first go with the sewing machine and she smashed it. Having done a fair few big projects Tracy is doing a smaller project this time and is speeding along with her stool top. Philippa’s French style chair is almost ready for fabric, back pad next. Peter is cracking on with the seat of his Edwardian tub chair. And Alison, having finished her cane stool, is tackling some rush weaving on a cute little child’s chair. We love the variety of projects that our lovely peeps bring to class! If you fancy having a go at some upholstery or seat weaving come and see us or drop us a message.

This sweet little chair has had the full works. Initially a loose cover which had definitely seen better days. Our customer decided to go for a complete change and have the chair rebuilt with fixed upholstery. Back to the bones we went, new foundations everywhere and new fillings on the arms and seat base, new felts everywhere else and a new seat pad. Fabric is Natasha Linen Summer Green. A large repeat so judicious use of fabric regarding pattern matching! We think it looks great! Back home in the conservatory, the perfect setting. New scatter cushion in a complementary fabric, another and a remnant from the dining chairs we did recently, one of which is lurking in the background trying to get in the shot).

Well our new term of leisure classes has kicked off this week. We’ve welcomed back our regulars who have been busy cracking on with their projects. We have also been delighted to welcome new peeps into the barn with some great projects to get stuck into. Lots of stripping down going on 🤭. As some projects get underway others are nearing the finish line. Peter finished off his traditional dining chair today, covered in the very lovely wiggle (avocado) with Solo braid (one of our own 😉). And as is the law with all finished projects a photo opportunity! How pleased 😌 is Peter and he should be, a great job!

Let’s face it, life as an upholsterer doesn’t get boring. Always a new challenge presenting itself. In this case a rebuild for a little tub chair which had been a loose cover. Now being transformed with fixed upholstery and no loose cover in sight. Some head scratching required on the insides where the big fat wings meet the arms. But we’ll figure it out when we get to that. Meanwhile templating the P facings underway.

1980s leather directors chair on its way home. Came into us for a repair to the seat platform which was well and truly shot! We weren’t able to track down a replacement Pirelli platform like the original (right size) so after some head scratching we reverted to the next best thing, Pirelli webbing with a woven elastic platform over that to provide a bit of cover for the metal clips to the frame. Bit of an archeological dig to get to do the platform suspension repair. Then new foam and new lining cloth to the leather platform sides. It’s gone back together nicely so is a nice repair making a beloved chair useable again for our customer. One of a pair so we will see how the repair holds out on test before doing chair 2…

😂 you know when you have that annoying sibling … the one that needs you. We’ve been helping out ours . Mega book-athon🤣🤣🤣. The perils of owning a trimmings business. To be fair we love it really. Although we’ve been hit hard by the lurgi recently 😷so that’s taken a bit out of us (blaming paddling Peter from our classes for bringing it in 🤣🤣). Hopefully soon we’ll be back at the bench ❤️
