Luckily the sun is out and I am able to sit in the garden whilst sanding the coffee table top back. I love the control you get with a hand detail sander. You can choose to leave on or take out as much of the wear and tear marks as possible.

Sometimes pieces need to keep there age and character and this is easily done with a palm sander. However on this occasion a lot of the marks are water marks and that simply doesn't go with the effect I want.

So its being stripped completely back with a rough, and then a fine sand paper before its new colour and wax are applied.

So the under shelf has gone! And thank goodness for that, It was in a very poor state. Luckily because the base and legs are being painted in chalk paint theres not a lot of restoration needed to the legs.

I shall sand them back where the shelf was attached to blend the two woods together so that when they are painted it becomes seamless and look like the shelf was never there.

So i've just got back from a lovely Holiday in Cornwall and am straight onto a new project, Here I am upcycling this chunky solid pine coffee table. The original (shown in photo) is covered in stains, marks and dog chews! This is all soon to be restored and given a new lease of life.

I am going to remove the underneath shelf section as it is badly damaged on the back and also allows more room for feet and little doggies to lay under.

The top will be stripped right back to remove all blemishes and stains and will be finished with a coat of jacobean medium oak wax to give a darker, classier finish.

The base will be hand painted in Annie Sloan Ochre, a shade of off white, to add to the rustic country effect.

We picked up a beautiful chunky farmhouse dining table and chairs a few weeks ago, a personal project which we are going to do up and store for our next house.

We have since been looking for a wooden bench to go with the set for along one side of the dining table. Today whilst out and about we managed to pick up a gorgeous solid wood bench and for Free! It's unbelievable the things people will throw away. Cannot wait to get this project underway

Wicker and Wood.

No one can ever have to much storage, but how do we create storage that is not only functional but also looks stylish. The answer is simple, Wicker. from baskets to boxes, wicker is so easily available to buy these days both new and second hand. It handily comes in many shapes and sizes to fit even the smallest of spaces.

I've got many wicker baskets dotted through out the house to fill gaps and holes that are crying out to hide my 'untidy' items. High street stores such as TkMax and Dunelm stock a large range whilst charity shops always have some available. Get creative and get tidy at the same time.

Before and After of this chunky pine unit that was crying out to be updated and transformed. We used Annie Sloan 'old white' paint for this piece and stained the top, shelves and nobs to a dark jacobean oak after all its initial prep.

The spindle back chairs.

After longer than we anticipated, with the wood change, we finally finished off the two chairs that we had picked up from the charity shop. They not only looked great and matched the rest of the furniture perfectly, but these chairs were also amazingly comfy. The backs with the spindles curve and almost sit to the shape of your back.

50 shades of wood.

It was part way through the sanding of the new chairs that we decided the natural pine wood was actually to light for what we wanted. We wanted to achieve a more rustic farmhouse look and needed to darken the wood. Yes, unfortunately this meant going back over the existing table top and chairs that we had just completed.

We eventually chose Jacobean Medium Oak, this photo shows the transformation from the original pine.

We found the chairs.

Finally after looking out for a couple more chairs to finish off the dining set we came across these awful burnt red chairs at our local charity shop. They had really tall backs and were completely different to the rest of the set which is exactly what we needed.

The red 'mahogany' style paint that had been used took so long to get off as the more you sanded the more it seeped into the wood. Eventually the layers of paint came away to reveal the wood underneath.

Experimenting and being brave with furniture is always key interior design. Using a mix of not only chair style, but also colour, can really add that wow factor to your dining set.

Keeping it classy with neutral tones and pastel shades or really going for a pop of colour with neons. A simple and uniformed set can still give off the wow factor however, sometimes a chair doesn't need colour to add a bit of drama, the wood and shape alone can do that.

whatever the style your going for don't be afraid to simply 'Mix it up'
