Some parts of the process are obvious.
Others happen quietly in the background but make all the difference.

Cleaning glue lines.
Pre-sanding prep.
Filling small imperfections.
Hand sanding.
Softening the edges.
Branding the underside.

They’re not the dramatic moments, but they’re part of what turns timber into a finished solid wood dining table, desk or conference table.

The details may be small. Skipping them was never really an option.

Not all wood furniture is the same.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with veneer, for some homes, budgets and short-term spaces, it can make perfect sense. But it behaves very differently to solid timber over time.

A solid wood dining table can be sanded, refinished and restored for years to come. Scratches become part of the story, not necessarily the end of the piece. Veneer, on the other hand, is far less forgiving once the surface layer is damaged.

There’s also a difference you tend to notice without immediately realising it: the weight, texture and natural variation of solid timber.

No two pieces of solid oak, walnut or rustic wood furniture will ever look exactly alike and that’s part of what makes them feel timeless.

Furniture is always an investment, whether large or small.

The real question is usually: do you want something for right now, or something you’ll still want to live with years from now?

The most satisfying part of the process?
Watching the oil bring the grain to life.

We finish our tables using a linseed oil–based finish from Rubio Monocoat rather than lacquer.

It enhances the natural character of the wood instead of covering it, especially on solid walnut, where the depth and movement in the grain really start to appear.

It’s also a far more practical finish for everyday living.
If scratches or marks ever appear over time, oil-finished solid wood furniture is much easier to refresh and maintain without needing to completely strip the surface.

Not all wood tables are made the same.

Some are designed to fill a space.
Others are designed to stay in it.

At Ashford Blake, we focus on what you don’t always see at first glance: the material underneath, the way it’s built, and how it will feel years from now, not just on delivery day.

Because a table isn’t just where you eat or work.
It becomes the surface of everyday life, slowly collecting meaning as it goes.

If you’ve ever wondered what actually makes handmade furniture different, this is it.

Spring has a way of shifting how we use our homes ☀️

Doors open more often, light stays longer, and spaces (indoors and out) start to feel like they’re meant to be used.

All of our solid wood tables and garden furniture are made to order in our workshop, whether in oak, walnut, rustic redwood, suar or iroko.

It means a little more time upfront, but something that’s made properly, for your space.

If you’re thinking about outdoor dining tables or updating your space for the months ahead, now is usually the right moment to start.

Closing the first quarter of the year with a few of our favourite deliveries.

It’s been a busy start of the year, with a few quiet changes happening behind the scenes and as spring settles in, it’s the time when homes start to shift too.

Here’s a little inspiration of how solid wood dining tables, desks and statement pieces in oak, walnut and rustic redwood can shape a dining room, kitchen or workspace. 💡

Spring is just around the corner, which means outdoor dining season is not far behind. ☀️

Our garden and outdoor dining tables are built from solid timber chosen to handle life outside — including iroko, a naturally durable hardwood often used for outdoor furniture.

This year we’ve also introduced a new oak outdoor table to the garden furniture collection.

Whether it’s a long lunch in the sun or an evening meal on the patio, a solid wood garden table quickly becomes the centre of the space.

Our current lead time is around 2–4 weeks, so if you’re planning your spring and summer outdoor dining setup, now is a good time to get your order in and have everything ready when the warmer days arrive.

What you see is a solid wood dining table.
What you don’t see is the process behind it.

From raw timber to planing, sanding and oiling — every oak, walnut and rustic wood table passes through many careful stages in the workshop before it’s ready for its new home.

Quiet work, honest materials, and a lot of sawdust along the way.

What we wish customers knew before ordering a solid wood table:

1️⃣ No two finished tables will ever look the same.
Solid oak, walnut or rustic redwood all have unique grain patterns and tonal variation. That’s the beauty of real timber; every dining table is truly one of one.

2️⃣ Weight and size matter.
A handcrafted solid wood dining table is substantial and that’s exactly why it feels so stable and built to last. But it also means access is something to consider. Tight staircases, narrow hallways, awkward turns — we’ve seen it all.

The good news? We plan ahead. Our dedicated delivery team assesses access carefully and we’ve developed our own methods over time. We find a way and make it work, it’s just something to be mindful of when choosing your size. If you’ve got any questions just get in touch.

3️⃣ Leg placement changes how a table feels.
Where the legs sit affects seating comfort, chair spacing and the overall balance of the piece, especially with larger rectangular or round dining tables.

The good thing is, leg positioning can be customised. If you have specific seating needs or space considerations, just get in touch and we’ll guide you through the options.

Bespoke furniture isn’t just about choosing a size and finish, it’s about understanding how the piece will live in your space. 💚

There’s a quiet power in the pieces that live at the edges of a room.

Our collection of console and side tables brings proportion, balance and purpose to hallways, living rooms and entrance spaces — places where everyday life meets design.

From the rich tones of solid walnut lamp tables to the welcoming presence of oak console tables with generous storage, each piece is hand-made, built to sit comfortably beside your favourite light, your keys, your books… and sometimes, your coffee.

These are the tables that don’t just fill a corner, they shape it.
