The end is in sight with the stone facing! I’m on to the fun bit creating 6 false arrow slit windows for birds to nest in. These are backed with a sandstone roofing slate to hide the block work.

I think it’s time to invest in some new equipment and repairs over Christmas… I’ve got a flat tire on my wheelbarrow and my trowel’s so worn down that there’s almost nothing left! 😂

Satisfying to complete this window. It was a battle with the weather over the past few days (I should probably have chosen a different time to do it but hey ho)

The job was to remove the old single glazed window, cement sill and sides and replace it with a like for like double glazed window and a lazonby sandstone sill.

We had no childcare lined up for Struan today, so he and I have spent the day working on our fireplace.

It’s starting to really take shape now and it’s satisfying to compare how it looks now to what it looked like when I first removed the old fire surround.

It’s also really nice to see Struan enjoying getting his hands dirty and working out how everything works!

Old unreliable strikes again 🤦‍♂️😂 spent my first day of my second week remaking brake lines for my van after an old corroded one split when changing its brakes.

I love splitting sandstone using a chisel, it feels magical to get a perfect split(although it doesn’t always work like that.)

In this photo I’ve made a couple of window sills for the extension I’m stone facing. By splitting rather than sawing the stone you get a natural edge which is much more aesthetic and in keeping with the final dressed stone outer-face of the building.

Yesterday I built a sandstone ramp to accommodate the change height of the landscape.

A desire path had formed at this point of my client’s garden showing the need to install a proper path.

Almost a couple of years ago I took the decision to step away from my trade and try something different. I joined Police Scotland.

As time went on I realised it wasn’t for me and I yearned to be back on the tools. I’m pleased to announce that I’ve taken that step and I’m back doing what I love and fulfilling my passion for traditional buildings… I realise I’m posting a photo of a modern building 😂 although I am stone facing it with sandstone and lime mortar.

Pretty chuffed with how it’s turned out, I particularly like the definition around the top where the stone and slate meet 😊

Almost finished the slate arch… I just need to remove the excess mortar and fit the iron bar in the middle… the former has been removed and it’s holding itself up though!!

A fun job within a job… still on the massive dry stone wall. I’m now using up old slates making a compound archway on top of the window rather than using a lintel…. I’m using mortar to do so- I’m not brave enough to try without 😂

Getting there with the curved wall, it’s now chest height and about two thirds of its final height and it isn’t half sturdy!

Proud of myself today, I’ve got 1 hour to go and I’ll have done a 10hr shift. Whilst I’ve done 10hrs in woodwork I’ve never done it stone walling before as it’s so hard on the body. Nice to know my endurance has come on over the years!
