Hey everyone, so the weather is changing, looking ahead if anybody has any indoor work they’re wanting done in the next few months don’t hesitate to get in touch. Whether it’s stonework, woodwork or something else. Big jobs, little jobs, fancy jobs or plain jobs 😂

Last year I ended up with entirely outside work all winter followed by indoor work through spring. This year it’s my intention that with a bit of prior planning I can switch those round. 😂

I recently did a job for Dalston Hall: the lead down-pipes and hoppers dating to around 1890 were hanging precariously from the building. As you might expect, these were very heavy and could have caused serious damage or injury had they fallen down.

One down-pipe was fairly simple and just needed new timber wedges fitted and the lead-capped nails hammered in again. The other pipe needed removing, repointing behind with lime mortar and reassembled. Some of the decorative lead scrolls had broken off and were missing so I made new ones to match.

Unfortunately due to deteriorating state of the down-pipe over the years, it was not possible to achieve a perfect finish while still maintaining the original lead however the down-pipe was made secure and saved from further damage.

Last week I had the fortune to fit this stunning weathervane made by Greens Weathervanes. They create bespoke copper sculptures to their clients specification.

This one is based on a Greylag goose, flocks of which can often be seen flying overhead. The detail achieved in the sculpture is amazing, it really captures the likeness of the birds.

As is often the case with my jobs, it wasn’t quite straightforward. The weathervane was to be secured internally rather than onto the gable end. This involved boring through the ridge tile and ridge beam. Re-enforcing the beam and fitting a new tie beam internally which had to be set at the correct height to accommodate the length of the weathervane pole. It was finally finished off with a bit of decorative lead flashing and a double helping of sealant.

It’s been a long time since I last updated my page. I’ve realised I never posted the end result of the stone facing job so here it is complete with arrow slits.

I’ve been so busy over the past few months with all sort of interesting jobs. I’ll try to post some of them over the next few days.

The end is in sight with the stone facing! I’m on to the fun bit creating 6 false arrow slit windows for birds to nest in. These are backed with a sandstone roofing slate to hide the block work.

Satisfying to complete this window. It was a battle with the weather over the past few days (I should probably have chosen a different time to do it but hey ho)

The job was to remove the old single glazed window, cement sill and sides and replace it with a like for like double glazed window and a lazonby sandstone sill.

We had no childcare lined up for Struan today, so he and I have spent the day working on our fireplace.

It’s starting to really take shape now and it’s satisfying to compare how it looks now to what it looked like when I first removed the old fire surround.

It’s also really nice to see Struan enjoying getting his hands dirty and working out how everything works!

I love splitting sandstone using a chisel, it feels magical to get a perfect split(although it doesn’t always work like that.)

In this photo I’ve made a couple of window sills for the extension I’m stone facing. By splitting rather than sawing the stone you get a natural edge which is much more aesthetic and in keeping with the final dressed stone outer-face of the building.
