Titchmarsh and Goodwin

Titchmarsh and Goodwin Handcrafting, beautiful wooden furniture since 1920. All made at our workshops in Ipswich, Suffolk, UK.

For over ninety years Titchmarsh & Goodwin have created beautiful furniture at Trinity Works in Ipswich’s Back Hamlet. We are unique in Britain in employing some of the country’s most gifted wood turners, carvers, cabinetmakers, and French polishers, not to mention a gilder, a glazier and a lacquer artist.

A cloakroom that could be a hundred years old. Brass, chain pull, oak panelling to the ceiling. Built now, in our Ipswich workshop, using the same methods we were using in 1920. Cistern by Catchpole & Rye

The carving on this grand oak four poster is something to behold.
It’s the sort of detail you only get by hand.
And because each bed is made for one owner, there’s room to work in something personal — a crest, a date, a motif that means something to the family.
Skills like these still being passed on in the workshop. We’re rather proud of that.

Sam and Jared working together on a recent kitchen install.

We’ve found some elements are best completed on the day, and the spacing and positioning of drawer dividers is one of them. It’s a decision that’s better made in the room than on a drawing.

This is the epitome of bespoke, and it’s only possible when the cabinet makers fit your kitchen themselves. We never outsource our kitchen fitting. If it’s made by T&G, it’s fitted by T&G

This is what a hundred years of furniture making leaves on a workshop wall.
Templates, mouldings, clamps, carvings…the working bits and pieces nobody made to be looked at.
No Workshop Friday from Jamie this week, he’s out seeing clients and talking through new projects, so here’s a wander round instead.

Last week our son completed his work experience at Titchmarsh & Goodwin.

Over the course of the week, he built this table from scratch, gaining hands-on experience of the craftsmanship, patience and precision that go into every bespoke piece we make.

Being 15, he’s a little camera shy, so you’ll have to take our word for it that one of the highlights of his week was having his first go at woodturning. The low point? Accidentally hitting his mentor on the head with the table… thankfully no serious injuries, and everyone saw the funny side! 😅

It was a fantastic week of learning, problem-solving and developing new skills, and we’re incredibly grateful to the whole T&G team for making him feel so welcome and especially to his mentor for the week for sharing his time, knowledge and enthusiasm.

Supporting the next generation of craftspeople is something we’re passionate about, and we hope this experience has sparked a lifelong appreciation for making things by hand.

What do you think of his first piece of furniture?
